I realise I’m being ridiculous (job interview)

My dream job came up recently. In a similar to role to what I do now but a different team (don’t want to be too outing). I felt like the job description described me and I’m never usually this confident about a job (usually the complete opposite!!) but felt as though I would have done a great job. It’s my specialism and interest and thought the interview went well. There were two vacancies and I didn’t get either. To say I’m absolutely gutted is an understatement! I feel broken and haven’t stopped crying all weekend. I realise I’m being ridiculous but I’m devastated l! How do I get past this? They can’t give me feedback until next week either so not even sure what I did wrong yet x

You're not being silly, it is gutting when you miss out on something like this. I hope maybe the feedback is helpful and gives you closure.

RandomMess · 27/05/2025 21:43

Some people are very good at interviews, I am not.

Probably nothing wrong - the other people were better suited for the roles.

A bit like the runner up at Wimbledon saying, truly, that they did their absolute best so they are really happy but the other player was better on the day.

Trabbling · 27/05/2025 21:49

Oh I'm so sorry - that sounds really disappointing. You're not being silly at all, and I hope the feedback gives you some answers and closure x

Neweverything25 · 27/05/2025 21:52

I'm sorry, remember it is not necessarily anything wrong with you, they just preferred other candidates for whatever reason (and hopefully not readverstised the role as it happened to me!). Best od luck for your next opportunity!

homeismyhaven · 27/05/2025 22:23

I’m with you on this- not silly at all. I have put my heart and soul into the interviews I’ve had recently, was so confident I could do the job and met the spec perfectly- didn’t get them. So so disheartening as I let myself hope and dream- feels like a punch to the gut.

from what I can see is job market seems flooded at the moment, also other thing to consider is if within same company and you’re doing a good job where you are did they want to keep you there?

cry and cry, then hold your head up high. There will be other opportunities. What’s for you won’t go by you as my granny would say.

ThisCatCanHop · 27/05/2025 22:30

Ah, I’m really sorry, OP. Sometimes it is interview technique but sometimes there is a preferred candidate - it might not be that you did anything wrong, not that that makes it less gutting.

AnnabelleQuelle · 27/05/2025 22:32

I am sorry that you’re in this situation. It could be any numbers of reasons. Perhaps they gave the jobs internally. Maybe it was nepotism and gave the roles to someone they know. Perhaps they decided to give it to a junior parson/people and pay them less, perhaps they had a diversity quota to fill and you didn’t fit the bill.

have a cry, and wait for the feedback next week. What is meant be is meant to be. Something better will come along. X

So this was an internal application. Tbh it’s fairly common that they have been advertised even though they already know who they want for those positions. You probably did nothing wrong.

summersingsinme · 28/05/2025 13:53

You aren't ridiculous, it can't help but feel like a rejection of "you" as a person, even though it is much more likely there were other things at play - as PPs have said, where a post is internal they often have people in mind for the role already.

I've just been on the other side of the interview process, and there were well qualified candidates that did great interviews that were just pipped at the post by slightly more suitable candidates. It wasn't personal, and we will definitely be keeping them in mind for future roles - you could ask that the same is done for you when you get your feedback.

Toddlerteaplease · 28/05/2025 14:18

Possibly the successful candidates scored more points.

Spirallingdownwards · 28/05/2025 14:20

The reality is there will have been other candidates too and whilst it suits you on paper it suits them too unless it's a really niche role.
