Words that schools made you to pronounce differently to what they are

At school, did you have words that if you said properly, you got told off?

For me it was Wednesday. We had to say wed nes day, not Wens-day.

This is not good.

We did too but I thought it was just sounding it out phonetically?

HÆLTHEPAIN · 27/05/2025 20:20

We pronounced it Wedensday!

Needmorelego · 27/05/2025 20:25

I was in the "extra help" spelling group where we often broke down words into smaller words.
So (in my head but not out loud) I always think of Wednesday as Wed. Nes. Day. 😂

Vet-ER-in-ary.

And one daft bint who insisted it's an not a before any word that starts with H, not just the ones that sound like they start with a vowel.

ThejoyofNC · 27/05/2025 20:41

No, but I had one teacher who really went out of her way to pronounce the P in rasPberry.

MidnightPatrol · 27/05/2025 20:43

My school was very anti us having the local accent, so we were endlessly told off for pronouncing things ‘incorrectly’.

Mooselooseinmyhoose · 27/05/2025 20:45

I had a teacher who insisted we call it Break- Fast. As in brake fast.

I appreciate the spelling and history may have been on their side but I don't know what single person who doesn't pronounce it Brek-fast

But it is Wed-nes-day and vet-er-in-ary … at least in my accent. The “nes” and the “er” are softer, but they are still there.

My late, much missed, Dad always used to say brake-fast when reading me a bedtime story & I'd correct him saying "it's brek fast Daddy!".
