Does anyone live on a road like this, do they still exist?

Where kids run in and out of each others houses and ride bikes on the street together?

Is this still a thing? I’d like to move to a road like this for my 6 year old. We currently have this, but not in the uk, does it still exist there?

So a cul-de-sak where there are kids in every house and all these kids are about the same age and friends with each other, and ride bikes and their parents have similar approaches to parenting and similar values ? I think you need a village with a good primary school.

Doingtheboxerbeat · 25/05/2025 14:47

They absolutely do, I live on one and they're feral they keep ringing our buzzer 😩.

stargirl1701 · 25/05/2025 14:47

Yes, that’s pretty normal in the hamlets and wee villages of Scotland.

Davros · 25/05/2025 14:48

You definitely need a cul-de-sac

Yupal · 25/05/2025 14:49

Yes, in both towns and rural areas, I live rurally and the nearest vlage has this, before that I live in a busy town on a big estate and plenty of kids playing on scooters, football etc

This is my set up. About 20 properties, most kids similar age and play out together. We all have tiny yards so being able to play out front is brilliant

dontcomeatme · 25/05/2025 14:54

Yep we do and I love it 🥰 we just finished building our DS new climbing frame in the garden so of course we've had all of the neighbour kids in and out for days haha. Our neighbours just hop the fence now, we've actually discussed getting a gate put between the houses! It's a lovely street, very 90s vibes, great for little ones. All the adults watch out for all the kids. It's great

HoskinsChoice · 25/05/2025 14:55

Yep, I live in a suburb of a huge city and the kids all play together. You need a cul de sac and one that's close to a great school (which will increase the likelihood of there being other kids there).

Joterrin · 25/05/2025 14:55

Yes in my old village.
I think anywhere you have kid’s similar ages & a safe road would have this.

I know a small town where they close residential streets on certain Sundays & allow kids to play out for the morning.

Yeah it’s like that where I am . Not a cul de sac but a very quiet road so you don’t need a cul de sac. We live in a quiet town in the Home Counties.

greglet · 25/05/2025 15:02

I do! We’re in Cheshire.

I do! Cul de Sac in the Home Counties near an excellent primary school

Whataninterestinglookingpotato · 25/05/2025 15:10

Yes, we do. On the edge of a medium sized town in the south west of England. New build estate that is a no through road. All the kids play out together. Mine used when we first moved in but are now too old.

MyCyanReader · 25/05/2025 15:14

Yup, we do in our village. The kids all play out the front in the cul de sac, or on the estate opposite in the open green/park area.

Iwantaparkingspacenow · 25/05/2025 15:20

You don't just need a cul de sac or a quiet front road. You can also have a quiet back street in an inner city location. We have one and when my child was younger, he played in the back street with lots of neighbouring children. It was a bit of a pain when they all came to my house to get their water pistols refilled. I think I was the soft parent who obliged them!

Boredboredboreder · 25/05/2025 14:59

Which areas?

bourne, Peterborough, loads of villages in Scotland. I drive a lot around the country and honestly it’s not that rare where you’re going to have to panic about finding a place. if it’s an estate or fairly quiet street it’s likely to have a decent amount playing out.

andtheworldrollson · 25/05/2025 15:51

there are huge swathes of many towns where it no longer happens - you just have to wander round and see what the area is like

at a hunch - an area that has a lot of children who are accessible without busy road crossing - so busy streets or lots of singles and retired people tend not to have this

Stickortwigs · 25/05/2025 15:58

There’s an area close to me which is an orthodox Jewish area and when you drive through there’s always tons of kids playing out and riding bikes, it’s like I remember my childhood being.

It seems so unusual now and isn’t particularly quiet or safer than anywhere else. I have wondered if it’s a cultural thing or just this particular area but I think it’s wonderful.

Yes I did, its the same street I grew up on actually! I've just bought a new house further along the street, my DP still live in our childhood home, I'm number 8 and they're 43. We're all really close as neighbours, family and community. It's amazing. North East of England in an old council estate, they are the best ones 🥰

Backinfraction · 25/05/2025 16:03

Yes I do too. It’s a cul de sac and luckily we have other family’s with similar aged kids so mine can play out with them. I feel very blessed as it doesn’t seem the norm.
