Baby and dog

Hello. Just looking for other perspectives.
I'm not someone who has ever had a pet dog nor is it really 'normal' in my culture to have dogs as pets.
My in laws do have a dog and it goes around the house. She molts alot!
My baby has just started crawling and I'm not keen with her crawling around the house. How can I approach this with the in laws?
Or am I being unreasonable?
Thanks!

All 3 of my children have grown up around animals. Dogs, cats, horses etc. We have dogs that shed a lot in the house.

They are all fine. We hoover, that’s it.

Don't damage your child’s relationship with their grandparents over this (providing the dog is safe of course!)

The hair is not a problem. Presumably they hoover? You do need to make sure that the baby is never able to grab at the dog though to make sure everyone stays safe.

Well the dog puts it's toys in the baby's face and has licked the baby. Also wagged it's tail in baby's face the other day. Baby does reach out and wants to touch the dog too.
They do vac but the hair is still everywhere.
It just makes me feel uncomfortable 😣

It's better for children to grow up with dogs as it builds their immune system.

Christmasbear1 · 25/05/2025 14:47

Make sure the dog doesn't lick the baby's mouth or open wounds. when baby grows up don't let baby grab the dog.

I can completely understand your concern, if you’ve not grown up around dogs, or had dogs and they’re not part of your culture.
Babies put all sorts in their mouth over time. I think I’m right in saying there’s evidence that suggests children exposed to pets have an immune system advantage.
we had two Labradors that molt and awful lot, lick our little one etc and she has been absolutely fine. Shes now two, and I’m not lying when I say in her 2 years she’s had only one instance of a bad tummy and diarrhoea- whereas I have friends with similar age kids who much much more regularly have bad tummies…and I think it’s her being exposed to dogs.

A bit of pet hair and things is better for the baby, as others have said it helps the immune system. Just make sure they are supervised around each other and you’ll be fine.

No problem at all. If dog is well cared for
and healthy. My DS grew up with dog a dog, he’s now 13 and not been ill or to doctor since age of 2 for jabs. No allergies, nothing. Hair is annoying but not actually dangerous.
