To feel utterly defeated by nits ?

Biggadyboo · 25/05/2025 11:37

Have two kids with learning disabilities. They have both had nits since January. Which means I have too.

Treated them first with Hedrin, three times every seven days, wet combing mid week.

still there

Then tried nitnot , no difference.

was advised by a GP friend to try Lyclear as different active ingredient. Have done that three times now. No change.

the kids both utterly hate having their hair combed. Their learning disabilities and sensory issues make it a stressful battle.

But nevertheless I’ve been fucking combing it with conditioner as much as I can the last two weeks . Almost every night. It’s utterly hell, screaming, crying, horrible. But I’ve been doing it

and today there are still literally hundreds of the bastards. I literally can’t comb them all out. There’s just too many

i don’t know what to do😭

I had this with my DD, the lotions don't kill the eggs. What finally got rid of them for me was combing every night with conditioner on the hair and spraying with tea tree oil before school which is supposed to repell them. I know it will be a lot more challenging for you with their disability, I'm sure you've already tried distractions whilst doing it to settle them more during the combing.

HoppingPavlova · 25/05/2025 15:11

My colleague used to swear by hair dye. She just matched all their hair up to the closest dye colour and did it every 6-8 weeks. Claimed the minute she went over, infestation back. No idea if it was that or a coincidence though.

Reallyyyyyy · 25/05/2025 15:12

Are you washing everyone's bedding after treating each time?

GildedRage · 25/05/2025 15:12

@MrsSunshine2b lice can live up to two days off the scalp, eggs 7 days. So yes you absolutely need to treat more than just hair especially if you’ve had them more than a few days.

Katemax82 · 25/05/2025 15:12

Buy some perfumers alcohol and douse their hair in it, leave on glfor and hour then comb/wash etc. Kills the bastards

DrummingMousWife · 25/05/2025 15:13

I had this with my dd, as soon as I thought we were over it, she got them again. Turns out she had a friend who was constantly covered in them, so I think she was reinfecting dd when we were clear. I made sure her hair was put in a bun for school and this did help. I feel your pain, took 6 months to clear dd.

WaveChaser · 25/05/2025 15:20

Not read all the replies. Have you tried NitWits?

I too have a daughter with SEN and hair brushing is a huge ordeal on a good day. Nitwits seem to kill them all for her (I didst condition as she won't allow me-tries to bite). Two treatments and they were gone.

Biggadyboo · 25/05/2025 15:20

yes washing bedding, brushes, clothes. Yes DD’s hair always plaited for school .

My daughter has very very thick hair and we've found it very difficult. She's also got sensory issues and won't let me near her with anything with an oily texture. The thing that seemed to work better than anything is Vamousse, it was quite expensive and her hair took nearly two bottles, we left it on overnight, because it's a mousse and dries quickly she could cope with it and it seemed to kill everything. Only issue we then had is that all the little eggs were on tehre dried and the comb wasn't taking them out easy.

TeenLifeMum · 25/05/2025 15:07

You don’t need to cut your hair. Use hair straighteners and that’ll burn some but also help with combing.

use a nitty gritty with loads of tea tree conditioner. I’ve only ever done this 3 nights in a row and by the third there’s none left, it’s just precautionary. Nitty gritty gets eggs out too so there shouldn’t be any left. With your situation I’d do every day until you find zero then every other day for a week just to check.

Tesco sells nitty gritty combs - game changer!

dd3 had a child in her class at primary who had a parent who didn’t believe in treating nits because they’re “normal and natural so all kids have them!” Argh! Dd3 had them so much as a result. Always spotted early so dd1&2 only had them twice ever. Hate the things.

After combing through, I used to straighten hair - I’m not sure if it killed any but it made it easier to see.

I’m wondering if we had kids at the same school. We had the same, a parent who said they were natural and would go when they wanted. The school ended up excluding the child because the infestation was so bad. The child wasn’t allowed back until she was clear. Some people are just fucking idiots.

Biggadyboo · 25/05/2025 16:07

Nitwits has the same active ingredient as Hedrin and nitnot , so reluctant to spend more money on it.

vammouse seems to be different

Sorry you're having to deal with this, it sounds like a massive pain.
I just wanted to say, I see this so much on threads where someone has kids with additional needs and is struggling and then they get aggressive messages telling them they clearly aren't doing enough. So many people just have no idea or concept that other people's lives are not the same as theirs and not everyone can easily add in an extra hour or two labour every day. When you feel like daily life is constantly on the edge of being actually manageable, something that might seem small like dealing with nits can be completely overwhelming.

CandidOchreShark · 25/05/2025 16:12

Will depend on child and hair length but hair straighteners......treat, comb, once hair dry then straighten hair. Fry the ××++!
Restraighten after 48hrs. Rpt twice a week. We were nit free in 2 weeks after really struggling.

Really hope you find solution that works for you

CatRescueNeeded · 25/05/2025 16:15

Vammouse worked for us. I wish I had tried it earlier

Thank you!!!!!!!!!! 🙏 honestly I’ m hanging by a thread generally, this just seems like the final kick in the teeth

all that's worked on my kids is a nutty gritty comb every day for a week then every other day then weekly. We do it every Sunday night to keep em at bay.
y friend cought them at work and used hair straightener on high to kill them. Said they literally popped as she passed over rhem. Never done this though.

Thehop · 25/05/2025 16:19

Would they go to a professional place to have them cleared?

GellerYeller · 25/05/2025 16:19

CherryRipe1 · 25/05/2025 11:51

Neem oil. Nit Kryptonite. It reeks horribly but eradicated dds persistent, treatment resistant nits. Leave overnight & kids will need to wear a cap. It's quite hard to shampoo out. After this be vigilant with conditioner and nit combing. Repeat if necessary but neem kills the adults and eggs.

I wholeheartedly agree with this. And once you’ve used it a a treatment, dilute some in an empty spray bottle with water and star anise oil. Mist it over their hair before school every day as a preventative, FOREVER. This is the only thing that worked for us.
Also due to my exhaustive research(in desperation), don’t believe that nits can’t survive off hair. We left one in a cup overnight(yuk), dangled a hair at it, and it was very much alive. So do remove all bedding, cushions, soft toys, and boil and hoover as needed.
I very much sympathise, the nightly combs, tears and in my case, thinned hair, is soul destroying. You can do all the right things, but other parents may not, so prevent as much as possible. 💐

Perhaps the school holidays will help as they will be away from any superspreaders the school has and indeed away from any soft furnishings at school which could be harbouring them. Is there anywhere else they could be getting them from?

Head lice don't live in soft furnishings like fleas, only on the head.

Yes I agree with this. I have an AuDHD son and he had shoulder length hair because I couldn’t get it cut and he screamed the house down when it was washed. Hated his head being touched. I had to put him through an ordeal of having a buzz cut before nursery because I knew that dealing with nits would be impossible. Some people have zero understanding of what that is like and how disabling sensory issues can be. There is no way he would have sat for hours having his hair combed in the same way I had to do with my daughter.

This was the only thing that worked for us when my dd kept coming home with them

XelaM · 25/05/2025 16:29

The best one was the 5minutes Morrisons one but you have to repeat it in 7 days to kill them all off

imagiantwitch · 25/05/2025 16:30

Do a treatment, comb every day use hair straighteners every day. The straighteners burn out any eggs, this routine works quickly for us every time

Elfontheshelfs · 25/05/2025 16:32

Make sure you have a good comb I found nitty gritty are better at getting the eggs then use different one for the bigger lice.

Head lice don't live in soft furnishings like fleas, only on the head.

They can live on pillows, bedding, hats, cuddly toys, blankets, car seat head rests, scarves etc anything in contact with the hair. You need to put these items away for two weeks. I found vacuuming the car seats worked. Freezing can help with cuddly toys. These lice can live for days away from the head.
