To ask for the best blonde home hair dye?

Asking in AIBU for traffic.

I normally get a full head of blonde highlights (lots and lots, so I look like I almost have a full head of colour) at the salon, but it's super expensive....So looking to touch up my roots at home. I'm very apprehensive though as if it goes wrong, it'll look terrible and I'll end up having to go the hairdresser to correct it anyway.....

Does anyone have any recommendations for a really good blonde hair dye? I go for a warm, honey type blonde, not the ashy shades...

Thanks!

I like Herbatint because it's ammonia free and is good for sensitive skin. It also doesn't take much to cover the greys 8D Light Golden Blonde - Herbatint

Yet to find a decent one for my blonde hair. Mostly they’re just orangey.

What colour is your blonde? I have tried many and now always use Loreal excellence, it’s the best I’ve found. I use light ash blonde and get a lovely even colour every time

Are your roots dark?

GarlicPile · 25/05/2025 00:00

Look at the colour charts online for the shade range you want. Stick to the big brands.

Either pick a shade in between your existing ones, or buy two: light and darker.
Do strand tests.
Remember your bleached hair will come out lighter, so you might want to test different strands.

I've been doing my own for decades - I got my colourist to talk me through it, but he didn't tell me anything you can't easily get from the internet now. It's really easy, cheap - and, contrary to popular wisdom, it's easy to rectify any mistakes.

Is this an “all over” hair colour, or a highlighting kit?

I’m a light but warm blonde, not the ashy or cool shade…..

If you are brunette you will bleach if you want to be blonde. Many of the box dyes don’t contain ammonia/ bleach and are really only for people that are mostly grey. If your hair is dark it’s likely to turn orange

This is my worry. I think there are some box dyes that do contain bleach though…?

The one I use is an all over box dye but my roots are grey now so it works fine. I first went blonde when my brunette hair had so many greys I was dying it every other week. It was hard going from brunette to blonde and my hair got very damaged. As PP said you will need to use bleach, I had too before but now I’ve gone grey the box dye works fine. Do lots of research regarding home bleaching is my advise. I also learnt that none of the expensive products like opelex that claim to repair bleached damaged hair really don’t. If your just bleaching your roots ir shouldn’t be too bad. Research bleach and toner

@Rainbowbub22 Thank you....I'm only 30 and still real brunette (medium brown), it lifts well with bleach in the salon due to it not being super dark, but still it is brunette so I will need bleach. I've seen hair dyes with bleach from Garnier and L'Oreal, both very old, trusted brands, but I am wary of making a mess. I will need to watch a few Youtube tutorials I think....

Just a suggestion but find out if your local FE college do a hairdressing course. I regularly get foils in, a cut and a blow dry and it costs less than £20
