AIBU to be worried about travelling to Romania right now? (Russia etc)

Was planning on staying in Sighisoara and driving to Bran. Is driving dodgy over there?

Of course it is safe . Romania is a very safe and beautiful country. Enjoy your trip ! Very jealous.

We went to Cluj last year. It seemed very safe. Nice country and nice people.

Teeheehee1579 · 25/05/2025 00:31

I was there last week (Cluj). I’d absolutely fine so I would get on with your trip.

I go several times a year and have done for nearly 20. It is totally fine. Amazing people, history, great food and stunning countryside. Massively underrated as a travel destination.

Romania is beautiful and a lovely place to visit, the roads up to Bran can be a bit hairy and watch out for bears

KrisAkabusi · 25/05/2025 00:43

Romania doesn't even border Russia! It wouldn't occur to me to be worried about that.

LoveWine123 · 25/05/2025 00:47

What does Romania have to do with Russia?

WhatHaveIDone889 · 25/05/2025 02:09

YABU. Perfectly safe. It's the EU and has the biggest NATO base. Russia would likely bomb London before it would have anything to do with Romania.

steff13 · 25/05/2025 03:36

Are you concerned about vampires?

ThePussy · 25/05/2025 05:57

No problem - I’m here now and lived here for many years. The Ukrainian border with Romania has been largely untouched by the war. Transylvania is beautiful, you will have an amazing holiday. My top tip would be to avoid Bucharest, and either fly directly to Cluj or get the train to Brasov and then hire a car. Bucharest traffic is madness and the road to Brasov on a Friday is like a car park.

BobbyBilliams · 25/05/2025 10:13

Thanks everyone. I suffer with anxiety so seeing that it borders Ukraine had me a bit panicky but I know I’m being daft really.

”watch out for bears” spiked my anxiety a bit 😂

Not scared of vampires - that’s why I want to go! 😂

We have just got back from Naples where the driving was absolutely chaotic, is Romania worse than Naples?

It would likely only be a night trip, would we have time to do Bran castle, The other castle that is ruins (can’t remember the name but it’s related to Dracula about 45 minutes away from Bucharest) AND Sighisoura in 3 days?

That should say 3 night trip

Yeah, Sighisoara is half a day really, plus time for lunch, it's pretty but very small.

There is time but there is A LOT of driving. No, the driving is not nearly as bad as in Naples.

Romania is a fab country, with lovely friendly people - you do see people begging but no more than anywhere in the UK (although they use kids more). Sibiu and Brasov are particularly pretty, although Bran castle is touristy (go early) it was better than I thought it would be, Pele's castle is apparently nicer (was closed, saw from outside). Some of the hotels might be considered "soviet chic" at the cheaper end, but still comfortable. Cluj is nice enough, the mountains near Sinaia and Bucegi are fab. Bucharest is a bit hit and miss in my view. Not the prettiest of capitals, and the old town is OK, and some of the parks (Cismigiu) are lovely, but you cannot read a menu in the old town area without people mithering you to go in, the palace of the parliament is vast and an outstanding tourist attraction, but has a mixed reception from the Romanians. Therme, near the airport in Bucharest is fab. The trains are very slow and basic, but cheap. Your treatment is different if you can say a few words of Romanian. We got a bear warning in Sinaia (noisy alert on phones) but they are not around every corner and you are very unlikely to encounter one. The public transport is OK (touch in with card) but BOLT is cheap enough (they have Uber, but more BOLT). Hope this helps x
