To be sick of wasting food and having no idea what snacks to buy for 11 year old?

It’s half term and my 11 year old wants to rustle up some snacks herself. What sort of snacks do people buy for their 11-13 year old kids to make?

Ds is13 and likes instant noodle type pots, olives, gherkins, chopped melon/pineapple (he quite enjoys chopping), pepparami, carrots and hummus, microwave porridge, bagels with butter and jam or cheese and ham, cereal, Greek yoghurt and honey, hot chocolate with squirty cream, strawberries with squirty cream, wrap with chicken lettuce and sweet chilli sauce.

I'd try and get things with long expiry dates or that you will eat also so that you aren't wasting food but just let her know exactly what is there and set it out do it's easy to find and offer a hand with chopping if you're worried initially.

And banana bread or brownies are fun and easy to make together but she could quite easily get to a point of making herself.

Coming back to this as I’ve just done some “reach into the fridge” stuff for us for next week (everyone has hectic schedule, nobody will be home much and everyone at different times). I’ve done:

sausages in a Tupperware box
boiled and peeled eggs
hummous (homemade, as easier and cheaper and I prefer more tahini in mine)
chia seed pots with oat milk and maple syrup
chopped strawberries (they were massive)
Apple slices (yep, slices)
chopped mango
penne pasta + pesto in individual servings
cucumber sticks
grapes cut into small bunches
slices of cheese with slices of gherkins (don’t ask)
cherry tomatoes and mozzarella balls in small tubs, balsamic vinegar but no salt
chopped cucumber salad with tahini dressing (no salt - would go soggy in no time)
decanted baked chicken wings MIL gave us as leftovers into two boxes with steamed broccoli florets

Just some ideas.

Can they make chocolate refrigerator cake? Cherries.fruit nuts. Mixed in bowl. Chill then slice. If you are with her ,some pizza bases to decorate.smoothies.

Why would it require adult supervision to tear up some ham and mozzarella? Are you worried they might slice an artery open on some packaging?

I’d either get a kids cookbook and ask her to pick from that, give her a small budget and take her to the shops to spend it or - depending on her ability to communicate- just keep reiterating to her that she will get snacks once she tells you more specifically what she wants
