Radio vs TV

I was born early 60s. My family never had a TV. We did, however, listen to the Radio almost all the time. My earliest memories are "Listen with Mother" and The Archers. Also on Sundays "The Clitheroe Kid" and "Round the Horne"
"Two Way Family Favourites" . There was "Children's Hour" and "Junior Choice"
There was 'always' something on the radio in my childhood and the beauty of radio is that you can do something else while you listen. You can paint or draw, knit or crochet, build lego, do a jigsaw, do the housework, anything you need your eyes for. You can listen and build the picture in your head, of stories and characters.

When I got married at 20 I got a telly. Still didn't watch it much as I was 20 and had better things to do. In recent years though, I've looked back at the time I've spent just sitting staring at the screen and letting things unfold, letting my imagination wither but fortunately not quite die. I've taken things in hand by
cutting telly watching to virtually zilch except the News.

Gone back to my childhood and to "listening" while I get on with something constructive. Much easier nowadays with streaming and headphones and audible etc.

YABU: Nowt wrong with video games and telly. Fuck off with your holier than thou attitude.

YANBU: Yeah. I can see your point.

😄 I've wasted my years watching tv. I love it. I watch my comfort show 'two doors down' daily

But I listen to radio 1 often and I'm trying to cut back on the tv

Maybe this will inspire me to ditch it and finally finish harry potter 5

It’s a bit of both for me. I’ve had a rare day with no responsibilities and have binge watched a series that I like but need to be in the mood for. Tomorrow I’ll have the radio on while I do things that are more productive. I do knit or cross stitch while watching tv though, I grew up in a house where my mum did 3 things at once while watching tv and I tend to do the same.

I used to read, draw, knit etc with the tv on. I personally love both (but yes, I’d guess radio is better for your eyes!!)

I'm like you OP. All my life I've preferred radio, and talking books and listening to music in preference to watching tv. I've got a very short attention span when it comes to tv and films.

And yes listening to the radio has always enabled me to do jigsaws and concentrate on knitting.

However, the changes the BBC has made to the quality of their radio stations in the last few years means that these days I find a lot of their output unlistenable to now.

I find myself actually sitting in silence a lot these days - no radio, no tv, no audiobook, no music.

Ok I grew up in the 70s only child love tv,especially old films. But love the radio, worked on my own for 15 years the wireless especially radio 4 stretched my mind...now 45 minutes full podcasts on dull subjects...

Still radio for me

Me too, to be honest. I turn on the news so I'm not completely out of touch.
But I enjoy silence and my own thoughts. I think myself very lucky for that.
It hasn't always been thus.

Video Killed the Radio Star

I grew up in the 80s and 90s but as I've got older (and busier!) I watch TV less and less. I much prefer listening so that I can 'do' simultaneously. I never quite know what to listen to though! Podcasts bore me, music I can listen to for short periods but again I get bored with it. Which radio stations are good? Music with some interesting chat and not too many adverts? Any recommendations?

RadiovTV · 23/05/2025 23:23

Audiobooks. Any book you always wanted to read. Classic or modern. You can download them free from your local library.

I do both. I listen to the radio in the daytime, mostly radio 4 but radio London on Friday, Saturday, Sunday morning. Then I watch telly later
