To think he shouldn't leave things like milk uncovered in the fridge

DH constantly leaves things in the fridge uncovered. Jug of milk from breakfast... He'll just put it back into the fridge in the jug uncovered.

I think it should be covered or returned to the bottle either way.

Who's right? Him or me?

I really couldn’t get worked up about uncovered milk jugs. Not that we have one.

chicken breasts and sausages…. That’s different. They need covering.

DilemmaDelilah · 22/05/2025 17:09

I wouldn't get het up about a jug of milk or a glass of juice. Anything that will dry out or has a strong smell gets well wrapped/covered, but not milk or juice.

CyberStrider · 22/05/2025 17:14

I'm not sure why but the pouring the jug back into the bottle just seems wrong to me. But then I'd just out the bottle on the table anyway...

The kids can't manage the 6 pint bottles. So we just decant into a jug.

It wouldn't bother me. Only cover stuff that might dry out or smells strong.

I'd understand if you said he always leaves it out.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 22/05/2025 17:41

Uncovered stuff just ends up tasting of fridge. It's grim. Does no one else taste it?!

Hankunamatata · 22/05/2025 17:42

Get a jug with a flip lid?

Icecreamstick · 22/05/2025 17:43

I think milk in a jug in the fridge is fine.

I wouldn't pour it back into the bottle as the milk in the jug has been out at room temperature and might not keep as long as the fully refrigerated milk.

Presumably the jug milk has a pretty quick turnover anyway.

MooseAndSquirrelLoveFlannel · 22/05/2025 17:46

Ewwwww, don't pour milk back into the bottle that's been sat out....that's grim!

Either get a jug with lid of buy smaller 4 pinters so the kids can manage them.

You're making a fuss about nothing.

Oh come on, "sat out" it's not like it's been sat in the sun for 6 hours...

I shove stuff back in the fridge uncovered all the time. When I’m clearing up after the millionth snack / meal of the day sometimes I am fed up and need to take shortcuts lol. Milk, juice and other drinks I wouldn’t be bothered about. My partner puts in things like uncovered leftover pasta or rice and that pisses me off because it dries out. But anything that can cope is fair game. It’s a faff getting out the cling film and it doesn’t stick well to things like plastic or enamel. Maybe get a jug with a lid for the milk to covering it is easy if it’s bothering you?

Can’t you just put less milk in the jug? I wouldn’t be putting that milk back in the bottle either

Agree with this - don't pour milk back in the original bottle.

Hdpr · 22/05/2025 18:36

Please don’t use clingfilm. So bad for the environment. Use reusable Tupperware or at least foil, which can be recycled

Of course. Anything else in the fridge with a strong smell will permeate in to uncovered stuff. Italian meats, camembert, cooked cabbage...(?!)

That's why, if children can't manage a 6 pint of milk chugger, I'd consider decanting it into a throughly cleansed 2 pinter with a lid.

Rocket science it's not.

NovemberMorn · 22/05/2025 18:39

Milk uncovered wouldn't bother me...Stilton cheese, now that's a different story.😡

The jug is staying.

Talipesmum · 22/05/2025 18:45

How long would the rest of the milk stay in the jug for? If it was going to be used up within half a day, in tea, coffee etc, then it’s fine. It it’s going to be there till the next morning, that feels a bit long.

What would you normally cover the jug with? I wouldn’t want to get a bit of clingfilm out each day. Can you get little silicone covers that pop over the top? Multi purpose easy use lid things.

TheBig50 · 22/05/2025 23:26

Well stop moaning then.

ButteredRadishes · 22/05/2025 18:40

The jug is staying.

This is bizarre. You're defending the jug while at the same time saying that it's insufficient and needs covering. You can't have it both ways.

Tryingtokeepgoing · 26/05/2025 13:19

Surely the simplest solution to this non-problem is just to buy a jug with a lid. Then, ‘problem’ solved, without creating unnecessary waste. Less than a tenner will restore harmony :)
