London Mumsnetters - AIBU to think it won’t cost a fortune to get a black cab…

From Victoria station to the Old Vic theatre? I don’t live in London and have theatre tickets for a Saturday matinee . I’ve busted my knee and won’t be able to manage public transport across London. I don’t want to waste the ticket, but also don’t want to spend a fortune on a black cab to and from the theatre…any idea how much it might cost?
Thanks in advance.

Uber may be cheaper.

OnlyMabelInTheBuilding · 22/05/2025 12:44

I’d get an Uber for a set fare.

MyKingdomForACat · 22/05/2025 12:45

Black cabbies are safer than Uber. Treat yourself x

BIWI · 22/05/2025 12:47

Depending on which way the driver goes, it.s 1.7 - 2.1 miles

Turmerictolly · 22/05/2025 12:47

It’ll probably be about £25-£30 spending on the traffic.

RareGoalsVerge · 22/05/2025 12:49

I would reckon less than £30 and worth every penny given the alternatives.

BIWI · 22/05/2025 12:49

Could you manage a bus? There’s a route directly from Victoria to The Old Vic:

*depending

MimiGC · 22/05/2025 13:17

@RareGoalsVerge£30 each way or return journey?

You can get black cabs on Uber now as well. Not sure if all the time but it seems frequently.
Then you can choose which you'd rather get. BC only cheaper if very little traffic, but it's not a massive difference. Uber and BC are equally safe.

Thanks. I didn’t know that. It estimates a 4 min walk once you get off the bus, which might be manageable (though will take me much longer at my current snail’s pace). Is Eccelstone Bridge, where the bus journey starts, close to Victoria station?

An uber is coming up as £10 … a black cab £15-19

FrenchandSaunders · 22/05/2025 13:22

Each way

Hermiaxx · 22/05/2025 13:29

Treat yourself to a lovely black cab - best journey even for £30!

Hope you recover soon but enjoy the play 💐

Eccleston Bridge runs at the back of the station/shopping mall.

Not sure john worboys victims would agree with you there

Needmorelego · 22/05/2025 13:43

My Uber app is telling me an estimate of around £15 but time of day will vary.
If the bus is the route I am thinking of (C1 ?) it can take forever.

Edit ......Hang on..... ignore that tube journey. I was thinking from Paddington.
Edit 2 : Correct tube route. Circle (yellow) or District (green) to Westminster. Jubilee (silver) to Waterloo.
It's about 2 or 3 stops in total.

Hereward1332 · 22/05/2025 13:44

If you're getting the train in and it stops at Clapham Junction, might be worth checking which platform. If you're up to it you could change for a Waterloo train there, which is opposite the Old Vic.

rose69 · 22/05/2025 13:53

The number 11 does stop outside the front of Victoria station. Stop R.
However the walk at Waterloo looks quite long as bus stops on York road.

you could check with the Old Vic whether to my would cancel or exchange ticket. Also look at theatte
monkey to see if there is any advice about leg room for your seat.

Needmorelego · 22/05/2025 13:56

@MimiGC about my tube advice......there are lifts at both Victoria and Waterloo.
But to be honest - get an Uber.
I use Uber in London almost daily.

Pigsears · 22/05/2025 14:06

There is a black cab rank at Victoria station. I'd get a black cab to the Old Vic. See how much it costs (I reckon £25-30 depending on the time). Then, afterwards, I'd look at getting an Uber (likely to be cheaper, harder to bail black cab outside Old Vic).

Download CityMapper if you are thinking of public transport. It will give you all the options and timings.

Pigsears · 22/05/2025 14:07

Uber pricing can be higher- depending on when. You also need to wait for one and if at a station, this is a pain.
This am I was quoted £28 for 2 mile journey for Uber. It was £11 last week.

Are they? I know that's the line that's always trotted out, but now they're all DBS checked, you get to know the name and reg no of the driver and details you can forward to a friend...I feel safer in an Uber than a randomly hailed cab.

Davros · 22/05/2025 14:18

Get a black cab. It’s a far superior service and vehicle
