AMERICANS, or those that have lived in the States. I need to talk about private parts

Please help me get an answer for my 7 year old boy. If fanny means bum then what is the non offensive slang for vagina? And what is the equivalent of willy or is it the same. I need answers before the school run 😭

OP posts:

Not American but why would you need a slang version for vagina? Vagina is a perfectly normal name to call a vagina.

Terrribletwos · 22/05/2025 13:54

And also penis is what you would name a penis.

HiRen · 22/05/2025 14:04

Fanny doesn't mean bum - it's only ever used in the context of fanny pack (bum bag).

Butt = bum.

I've never heard of a slang term for vagina, other than explicit music lyrics which aren't appropriate for a 7yo. People are too prudish here. Or maybe just in front of me. Maybe at a push "coochie"?

The slang for penis is dick.

Why on earth do you need to know this?

MrsCarson · 22/05/2025 14:06

My kids were all born and raised in US, now in UK.
I remember all the boys at the elementary school called their penis either a penis or a wiener.
The girls had multiple names, a sho, a foof, vag, lady parts, you name it.
Edited to add, yes fanny was used for bum or butt. Kids would be told to get your fanny over here, etc.

Privates

Vodkamartini3olives · 22/05/2025 14:17

Cooter

MaloryJones · 22/05/2025 14:18

Just, whatever happens, don't ask if anyone has a rubber .

Vodkamartini3olives · 22/05/2025 14:19

Oh missed the 2md part. Willy - Wiener

Shitmonger · 22/05/2025 14:30

I’m not sure your 7 year-old boy needs to be talking about girls’ private parts at school or have a name for them. Hmm He’s wanting an answer before school?? Tell him he doesn’t need to talk about that in school because he’s there to learn.

But having worked in the US, he can say “privates” or “private parts” for both. If he says anything else, including running around shouting “penis” and “vagina” in school, he will most likely be disciplined.

Caligirl80 · 22/05/2025 14:59

Please don't use daft names for private parts. Call them what they actually are. It can prevent big time problems if there are (god forbid) abuse problems. A penis is a penis, a vulva is a vulva etc etc.

Saying "private parts" can be too vague to bring a successful legal action - sad but true. And the difference in usage between "fanny" and "bum" between the US and the UK illustrates the potential dangers in not using the actual, correct, terminology.

YankTank · 22/05/2025 15:02

Cooter is SUPER crude. Think: minge. Wouldn’t want to hear that from a 7yo’s mouth.

PurpleThistle7 · 22/05/2025 15:02

its actually super regional - very different answers depending on where you live in the states. My husband and I are both American immigrants but from different parts of the states so grew up with different silliness.

(and yeah - never heard the word Fanny to mean anything of the sort until moving here. Grew up watching Funny girl and the main character is named Fanny 😂

tartyflette · 22/05/2025 15:10

Fanny is, or was, a girl's name here in the uk too. Short for Frances. Fanny Adams was a real person, I think.
(one of my late DF's nicknames for me was Fanny Fanackapan. I think it came from a song by someone like Gracie Fields.)
But very old-fashioned now and obviously problematic too!

CloudywMeatballs · 22/05/2025 15:18

Fanny definitely does mean bum in the US, but sounds very old fashioned, like something your grandmother might say. "Sit your fanny down."

I can't think of any non offensive generally used slang term for a vulva or vagina. There are certainly "cute" euphemisms that some families might use.

In my experience, most children are taught the correct terms for their private parts here (penis, not willy for example).

But why, oh why, is your 7 year old asking this and why are you indulging him?

BobbyBiscuits · 22/05/2025 15:19

The vagina is the internal canal beneath the cervix, the vulva is the outside part of the female reproductive organs.
There's no need for anyone to refer to any body parts as a fanny.
I guess butt or bum is fine though?

Exactly right. The only other time I've heard someone talking about getting a "pat on the fanny" is in the context of team sports - like the coach patting a player on the ass before they go in for a baseball at-bat or a football play - but that's older school these days. Tushie or tush would be a nickname for a butt too.

But, again, in the context of describing private parts in the school setting and at home: just use the correct words. If your son has heard a word he doesn't understand he can ask you about it, but I wouldn't be giving him other words to use!

Edited

I think Fanny Adams was a little girl who was murdered back in Victorian times sadly.

I love the word 'minge'. Always makes me laugh...

AppleAng35 · 22/05/2025 15:35

I’m American. Growing up it was coochie or hoo-hoo for girls and weiner or pee-pee for boys.

mathanxiety · 22/05/2025 15:36

Vagina, vulva, penis/ wiener.
Also 'privates'.

I've heard boys aged 6-8 refer to nuts and gonads/nads.

'Butt' covers the entire area.
'Butthole' refers to the anus.

Ass isn't a term used by elementary school kids, in my observation.
It's a term with several meanings.

My kids grew up in the 90s and 00s in the US, and I do a good deal of work with kids.
In general I notice far less euphemistic speech around genitals in the area we live, and in my work, than in the UK, and little or no jokey banter centered around genitals. Its just not part of the culture, especially in middle class areas.

Your child won't need to worry that conversations will revolve aaround body parts or bodily functions, and nobody will blush if correct terms are used. (This may be geographically dependent, however - I do not have experience of the South).

Poop is the term usually used for poo.
Pee is used for wee.
Toilet is the term for loo.

mathanxiety · 22/05/2025 15:41

YY to 'tush' and 'tushie'.
This would be used when an adult speaks to a child mostly.

Bum means a rough sleeper, and it is also a verb - 'to bum a cigarette' means to ask a friend for one. Basically, to beg.

Moier · 22/05/2025 15:41

Gosh almighty.
It's a Penis.
It's a vagina.
No matter how old they are.
What's the problem?

ItGhoul · 22/05/2025 15:43

Fanny doesn't mean bum

It absolutely does mean bum. There's an episode of Friends where Phoebe's brother touches a masseuse's bum and she says 'he touched my fanny' and he said 'you touched mine first'.

DaisyChain505 · 22/05/2025 15:44

Penis and Vagina.

Call them what they are.
