to not want to store my parent's belongings

This has been a long time coming as they have been waiting to move for a couple of years. The time has now come and they are unprepared.

They have sold one house which is about to exchange this week, but can't/won't sell the other house until the tenants move out (end of month). They are going to move onto their houseboat for the summer and supposedly put their furniture into storage until they sell the 2nd house and buy one.

However, i keep getting 'subtle' phonecalls about the cost of storage, east access to clothes, why can't i clean out our garage for their stuff, etc. Am i being unreasonable? We have a house that is full of our crap, and do not have the room to store more stuff for 6 months or more (my dads timescale).

This may seem a bit petty, but they just do not seem to hear anything that is not what they want to hear - including buying in the same road

oops, sorry it should be 'easy access' not east

Depends on your relationship to them and how big your house is. We cut our living room in two when my parents had a gap between houses and put all their important stuff there and in the garage. They did have storage too however.

Could you offer to keep just a few important bits? Storage not actually that expensive at the mo.

So no - YANBU if it's a whole house worth of stuff.

ElizabethBeresford · 20/05/2008 16:32

Could they come 'round themselves and tidy up your garage and compact what's in it, and then put their own (limited) stuff in it.

ie, they do the donkey work at no inconvenience to you.

BUT... it would be hard to get a whole house worth of stuff in to one garage.

bubblagirl · 20/05/2008 16:36

well i would want to help as much as i could so could you find a compromise with them

beaniesteve · 20/05/2008 16:38

hmmm- have you ever used their house as a storage place? Did you leave stuff in there when you were in education or ever between moves?

MrsBoo · 20/05/2008 16:41

My parents have let us move in with them twice (for one week each time) in between house moves, and for about 6 weeks when we had our extension done. So I would be happy to store some stuff for them.

goblinvalley · 20/05/2008 16:42

Thanks for the thoughts. Our house is a reasonable 3 bed and full of our belongings, which my parents are fully aware of. They keep filling it with massive plastic toys for my ds. Tidying up themselves is not an option - we are expected to do it - however our garage gets damp and is not really suitable to store anything other than garden furniture and my dhs motorbike.

I have offered to take the expensive stuff, but it all comes with conditions, like i cannot stop the clock from chiming !

beaniesteve - never between moves but they stored some stuff while at university in the loft

Unfortunately, our loft is unusable due to it being so shallow - so stuff that would normally be stored in a loft is stored in the house which takes up a reasonable amount of space.

I'm trying not to be unreasonable, but my parents know what our storage situation is and still want us to find room, rather than pay storage fees......and yet my brother is not being asked to store anything but that is a whole 'nother story

Is it not possible for them to store their stuff in the second house after tenants have left (only days), buy their new house with the proceeds of the first - then sell the second?

lizziemun · 20/05/2008 17:09

YANBU,

If you don't have room then you cant. Yes take the more expensive stuff.

I didn't think storage was that expensive now days.

prettybird · 20/05/2008 17:11

Have they looked into self storage - a whole lot cheaper than a removals company storage, plus you don't then have to pay for the privilege of accessing your own stuff.

If you google "self sotrage" fro your area, I am sure you will come up with lots of alternatives.

We stroed a load of furniture and belongings form my house when I moved up to Glasgow into my (now) dh's one bedroom flat. I checked out loads of palces - some open 7am to 8pm, others open 24 hours. They varied quite a bit in price, but none were anywehre close what eg Pickofrds would have charged. I chose the most reasonalbe restricted opening hours one as I reckoned I owuldn't need something urgently in the middle of the night, plus it was closest to us and where I worked.

I know this isn't the answer you want but tbh I do think YABU.

Where I come from, we help our family members when they have a problem. That's what families are for really

goblinvalley · 20/05/2008 18:15

Thanks for the honesty - i can take it

Unfortunately there are alot of other issues tied up in this aswell , so is probably colouring my judgement a bit. I will try and make some space

OP posts:
madmuggle · 20/05/2008 19:17

Not unreasonable at all. They'll have known about this for a while if they're selling. Their issue, they should deal with it.

The insurance to store there belongings in your garage is going to be how much? Far cheaper to get proper secure storgae and a lot less heartache if things go wrong it will not be down to you.

TheOddOne · 18/03/2009 17:41

This thread is nearly a year old.

solidgoldbrass · 18/03/2009 17:41

There is a difference between refusing to help someone and it being simply not practical or possible to do so (ie the OP says her garage is too damp to store valuables safely - a damp garage would certianly fuck up a clock).
