Child sleepwalking?

My 7 year old has just come into my bedroom and seemed all confused. He was awake - I think(?) and saying “I was just erm, trying to make shadows”.

I said “what’s wrong?” And he just repeated “erm, the shadows, I… erm….not sure? Shadows”

so I took him back to bed and he’s (I think) gone back to sleep. Its freaked me out?!

does this sound like he was awake or asleep? He answered me, but didn’t really make any sense

Sounds like sleepwalking to me! 😄

Oh god - I really hope this isn’t a new habit. I’m terrified he will hurt himself if I’m asleep!!!!

I slept walked a lot as a kid! A couple.times.went in my brother's room and sat down to go to the toilet on his bed! and was rudely awoken by him punching me and shouting it's not the toilet!!

I walked all over the place, including downstairs! But miraculously never injured myself! I grew out of it!

Sounds absolutely like sleepwalking to me. I've done it all my life, and this is 100% the sort of weirdy nonsense I say 😊

If he's never done it before, he may well never do it again. But as long as your house is secure each night (so he can't get outside and wander off) it's very unlikely he'll hurt himself, so try not to worry. Just do what you did tonight, which is to take him back to bed.

He's highly unlikely to hurt himself, don't worry. Sleepwalkers are usually aware of their surroundings to some extent even though they're asleep - mostly they can do things like go up and down stairs, and navigate around the house perfectly well without coming to any harm. That's how he was able to find your room, walk into it and speak to you. He could see where he was, even though he was 'asleep' at the time.

Honestly, don't worry - it's really common in kids.

This is really reassuring and makes me feel a little better. Now I think of it, he has done this before when we went on a caravan holiday earlier in the year! He got up and thought the living room sofa was his bed and kept going there when we asked him to go to bed (we led him back to actual bed!)

it’s really freaky!!!
