To get rid of our Living Room and turn it into a Playroom?

We currently have a small playroom (approx 3.5m x 3.5m), a much larger living room (6m x 4m) and a big open plan kitchen/lounge area containing a sofa area with TV etc (basically another open plan living area).

The living room doesn’t get used much really - DC is always wanting us in the playroom, and we gravitate towards the living area in the kitchen really as the sofa is bigger and comfier!

I’m considering changing the living room into a bigger playroom for DC (aged 3 with another on the way), so that it’s comfier for us all to be in there playing on the floor as it’s a bit cramped in the current playroom. Also thinking we’ll need room to get all of the baby toys back out too in a few months time.

Is it weird to have no dedicated living room but a really big playroom?! We would still have a small sofa in there but get rid of all other furniture other than toy storage etc. And probably redecorate so that it’s more “playroom”.

Sounds okay to me! Does not have to be forever after all.

I am a big believer in utilising your space in the way that suits you at the time.

We used to have a fairly large living room and a smaller guest room. But I got sick of guests and so turned the latter into a study for WFH and the large living room into a play room (but with a sofa and tv). That lasted until the Dcs were teens and now it's back as a living room. It suited us at the time down to the ground. Because the Dcs could play and watch tv and it became more a family room.

Yanbu girl, sounds good x

Sounds sensible. You still have a nice area for family/entertaining in the open plan part, which will be easier to keep tidy as kids’ stuff will all go in the big playroom. When they’re older, it can be a teenage den. You could make the little room into a study? My top tip: as much storage as you can in the big playroom.

Your home, use it how it best suits you.

Will You be turning the old playroom into a new ‘living room’ / more adult space?

Ineedanewsofa · 21/05/2025 18:02

Go for it! We had a similar set up to you in our last house but the weird layout meant we couldn’t swap the two rooms really, otherwise I would have. It’s not that many years until toys start to reduce and become manageable in bedrooms, then you get a big living room back if you want it 😊

Our lounge turned into a playroom by stealth. Lean into it 😂

Poppyyoutwat · 21/05/2025 18:05

Do it. We have pretty much the same layout and have done the same. It’s so much better.

We turned the sitting area near the kitchen into a family room which we basically lived in when the kids were small. It meant they could be playing while I did any cooking plus it had the door to the garden. The main living room was mostly used when we had people over.

When I was a kid long long time ago our playroom was bigger than the sitting room which was just for sitting in! (Tv and reading)

Sounds like a great idea, wish we had the spare space for this! If it works for your family go for it x

No one I know really has a play room...everyone I know keeps the toys in the living room and bedroom
