To think minimoons are ridiculous!?

GoldenNuggets08 · 21/05/2025 13:57

Can someone explain why the term "minimoon" was invented? Did the tourism/ travel industry come up with it to get even more money from people?

I had a conversation recently with people about where to go on honeymoon, and a significant proportion of the group were going on "minimoon" shortly after the wedding to places like Italy, Malta, Portugal, Greece, Croatia..... and then 6-12 months after the wedding were doing a bigger trip like safari in South Africa or Mexico... surely the "minimoon" is the honeymoon and the other trip is just a holiday??? It's a bit "you went to Tenerife, I went to Elevenerife"...

Minimoon, babymoon, staycation... Fuck off. They're just holidays.

Also gender reveals, engagement parties and baby showers can fuck off too.

I think I might be hormonal and grouchy today😂

I remember a friend excitedly telling me about a minimoon they had planned for the couple and the dog

That would be a... Doggymoon? No?

Aihospit · 21/05/2025 15:17

The whole honeymoon thing for most UK couples in 2025 is a world away from the original meaning of the phase. When you lived with your parents before marriage, not sleeping over with each other, it was about privacy and a chance to get to know each other.
Very few people today get married to justify having sex. The idea that two virgins have a short break before a year's wait till the proper honeymoon is mad. And an extreme adventure holiday isn't a honeymoon in the original spirit either.

InMyOpenOnion · 21/05/2025 15:17

I suppose it depends on your focus on the meaning. OP is taking the focus on the timing, ie, it's a holiday directly after the wedding. But weddings are different from the time that interpretation was started, and lots of people these days take honeymoon to mean "special holiday taken as an extension to the wedding celebration". Because of time or money constraints, this may not now be straight after the wedding. I really don't think it matters.

I thought you were referring to Little Moons ice cream which I recently had for the first time - I was thinking yes a ridiculous price at £5! Grin

😂Are they good though??? Because I've seen them and been tempted but the texture of them looks a bit iffy?!

ERthree · 21/05/2025 15:22

I must be old because i thought this was about an updated version of the Moomins😛I will crawl back into my cave now.

No, they're terrible.

i bought them on offer at £3.75 - six gelatinous in texture tiny balls not much bigger than a Malteser!

Hackney Gelato is sooo good. Especially the pistachio, almond and lemon 🤌

BeardofHagrid · 21/05/2025 15:34

Sorry I saw the title and thought you were on about those little balls of ice cream whatever they’re called 😂 I was about to say I think they are ridiculous too, just give me a tub of Haagen Dazs please 🤭

Stressmode · 21/05/2025 15:46

They are not compulsory. If they aren’t for you, don’t have one!

housethatbuiltme · 21/05/2025 15:54

A honeymoon is a holiday taken by newlyweds (the time does not have to be the day of or day after the wedding)... and you are classed as newly weds for between 6 months - 2 years in different areas.

You can have more than 1 holiday in that time and its still in your 'honeymoon' phase. So you can have more than 1 honeymoon and they can be big or small.

ljhdsa · 21/05/2025 15:55

What weirds me out is people calling honeymoons with kids honeymoons…I know more people are marrying post kids these days, but it’s a family holiday, not a honeymoon!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 21/05/2025 15:56

I don’t see why we need a constant new stream of words for things that people may or may not choose to do. And that make no sense - why do we need “moon” on the end of everything? So to that extent YANBU

But in terms of the people actually taking these trips then I have no issue with it.

A lot of it is probably people who asked for cash/ contributions to the big holiday as their wedding gift - so need to know what gifted money they have got to spend.

Yes I've no issue with people taking the trips either. I think in my case every time I've heard the phrase used its "well we are going on minimoon in June to Stella Island in Crete and the honeymoon next February on a 6 week cruise of the Caribbean" type thing. Slight exaggeration (although not much) but they've always been all booked in advance of the wedding so it's not a case of money and usually both sound pretty extravagant to me. But as a few have said they are all just holidays anyway so I think I'll use that myself going forward. 😅😅

it doesn't bother me, each to their own, just got me intrigued what people classify as a minimoon v honeymoon and where the notion even started from. The wedding industry just seems to be constantly snowballing and I'm in the thick of it at the moment so was getting others opinions!

Me too! I’m quite enjoying the cinnamon bun flavour at the moment.

Why's it not a case of money? I've got a holiday next February thats going to end up being about £5000. It's all booked already, but I've only had to fork out around £200 thus far, the rest isn't going to be charged until December.

People have said the people they know who did it didn't have any honeymoon booked because they were waiting to see what contributions there were given before deciding what they could afford. I'm saying that's it's not a case of waiting for money to see what they can afford because they already have everything booked.

But it might be that they've just forked out a load of cash for a wedding so can't afford it right now, but will be able to by the time the payment day rolls round.
