To have complained to a shop manager about the way he spoke to his staff member

The lady in question got in a muddle when someone wanted to pay their TV licence, apparently you have to swipe a special machine. At first I thought he was being jokey/affectionate ie "oh what are you like" but he wasn't- he said in front of all the customers, "how many times do I have to tell you and show you, you keep doing this..."etc. Then told the customer "It's like speaking to a brick wall" . He then sent the lady to serve me, she was all upset and swiped my stuff without logging into the till- no problem, no one died, no need to shout. She is probably late 60s, and very slow at serving, but so what? It's a local shop, don't go if you're in a rush. There really are worst things to deal with imo.

Said customer also made a comment- at which point I had had enough and said"Don't you start as well!" then asked to speak to the man, who had legged it to the office. I got him back out and just said how inappropriate it was to speak to her (and about her) in that way, especially in front of customers. He actually tried to justify it by saying "I've told her loads of times..." and I am afraid I saw red, voice was shaky but controlled, v polite and said "No sorry, it is never appropriate to treat someone like that, and tbh I personally would not speak to someone like that even in private". Poor woman , really felt for her- v humiliating . Am still a bit wobbly now at my boldness, I am not usually that vocal- and of course now I have though of other things I should have said! fgs though, it took him less than 5 mins to sort the problem out.

What a bully.

Olihan · 20/05/2008 15:04

Well done, that's the sort of situation I'd normally keep quiet in - it's great you had the nerve to speak out. Hopefully you made him think.

Marina · 20/05/2008 15:14

Well done, a good manager would never make either staff or clientele feel small or bullied in front of others
Good for you thritbies

bubblagirl · 20/05/2008 15:35

i ahve done this also myself before

our local garage has a man with obvious learning disabilities working in there manager was very rude to him

so i spoke out stuck up for the bloke and told him it cant be easy working for such ignorant stuck up idiots thanked him very much for his help

and told the managers that they should have known better and if they thought they were showing him up it back fired as they looked absolutely stupid and unproffesional

said bloke was smirking serving next customer and they were no longer smiling when i left

so well done you no one needs to feel they are up there own arses and justify themselves to humiliate others as most of time they are just looking plain stupid themselves but needs someone to knock them down that peg or two

Lucifera · 20/05/2008 15:49

Well done thritbies for speaking up, you were being reasonable, human and brave. I hope I would do the same.

thritbies · 20/05/2008 16:10

thank you all!

Am still fuming thinking about him, pretty sure he wouldn't like his Mother spoken to like that. Whilst waiting to speak to him I was thinking should I say anything, is he going to be arsey with me, but I know I'd be kicking myself forevermore if I hadn't! Oh, I am getting bloshy in my old age

KarenThirl · 20/05/2008 17:35

Proud of you. A few of us have witnessed that sort of thing but not many have the gall to stand up to it, especially if not directly involved.

Reward yourself with something delicious of your choice!

Well done you! I hate it when people think they're something special, I would have wanted to say something and hope I would have.

I was in a baby shop when someone asked the woman at the till how much something was, it was £3.99 but the woman only had £3.90. Cashier said "Sorry, I can only accept £3.99 for it" quite blunt, the look on her face and sound of her voice you would think she was asking a major discount and she wasn't quiet, the woman looked embarrased. I got so angry, I gave her 10p. She said "are you sure?" so I said "It's only 10p, you can't leave something for the sake of 10p!" I then told the cashier to keep the 1p change from my shopping as they were obviously in need of the money.

Saturn74 · 20/05/2008 17:58

You've probably just ruined 35 years of pent-up sexual tension between the two staff members of the local shop!

No, you did well to speak out about it.
He sounds like a bully.

mrsleroyjethrogibbs · 20/05/2008 18:15

well done you. good work

edam · 20/05/2008 18:20

Ooh, jolly well done that woman. So nice to see a bully pulled up short. Hope he now realises he can't get away with behaving like that.

AbbeyA · 20/05/2008 18:31

Well done. A bully shouldn't be allowed to get away with it.
