Neighbours new cctv alarm goes off every time someone approaches my house

Diagram attached as the setup is a bit unusual. I live in a cul de sac in a quiet town which is generally safe, but neighbour has a teenage son who seems to have some issues (occasionally 'goes missing', maybe a gang/drug connection?).

A few months ago neighbour installed a camera looking out from her front door. No problem, we have one as do most of our neighbours. Then a few weeks ago it started saying 'hi! You're being recorded!' in a loud voice every time someone walks past. Very irritating, but I can live with it. But today, she's either installed a new one or changed a setting and it now gives off a very loud alarm, every time someone walks past. I just had a delivery and the driver was very concerned - it sounds like a car or house alarm, there's no indication of why it's going off.

Because of how our houses are arranged there's no way to approach my house without setting it off.

Neighbour has serious issues and asking her nicely to turn it off is not an option. Is what she doing actually against any laws? I think the camera is fine, since it's not pointed directly at our house. But are there any rules about alarms/motion sensors? Is the only thing I can do complain about the noise to the council?

In your shoes I would complain to the council - its website should have contact details.

My council specifically lists among the noise complaints it can investigate "Property/Car Alarms".

If it's ring it sounds like she's enabled siren mode. I'd find that very annoying!!! Her phone will ping on motion, no need to have audible siren especially on the front door where it inconveniences neighbours

LindorDoubleChoc · 21/05/2025 11:29

You don't have to ask her nicely, you need to tell her she turns it off or you'll take further action. What else are you going to do Confused?

RareGoalsVerge · 21/05/2025 11:30

This comes under the category of noise nuisance. It is appropriate to complain to the council and as other nice neighbours to do so too, and let the council deal with the crazy.

TheNightingalesStarling · 21/05/2025 11:33

If its something like a Ring you can set the parameters so its only activated on your property. She needs to adjust the settings.

Trumptonagain · 21/05/2025 11:36

It sounds like the camera itself needs adjusting, it's possibly set to cover a larger area than needs to so an easy fix.

It's just the approaching of the neighbour to ask.

Have your neighbours mentioned to what extent it gets on their nerves?

latetothefisting · 21/05/2025 11:41

Agree with asking nicely first-if it's not an option to talk to her can you put a letter through her letterbox?

If that doesn't work try standing in the area and walking around so the alarm goes off continuously while she's in her house (if at inconvenient times like when she's trying to sleep, even better) as surely that will prompt her to change it for her own wellbeing, and nobody can say you are doing anything wrong just standing in front of your own house/doing some gardening/taking a big load of shopping bath and forth to the car etc.

Maybe tell your nice neighbours beforehand so they aren't inconvenienced - if it annoys them as well they might join in!

If its loud in your house surely it will be even louder in hers!

DuckyLuck · 21/05/2025 12:47

Could your nice neighbour ask crazy neighbour? Assume they are affected same as you?

namechange0998776554799000 · 21/05/2025 13:13

Nice neighbour is very young, recently moved in, realising why the last people moved out and terrified of crazy neighbour so they're no help

She can't adjust the settings to cover a smaller area - you have to walk right past her front door to access our house

I’d do what pp suggested set it off a lot when she is at home.

Do you own or rent. If own I’m wondering if you’d have to declare a dispute if you complained about noise. If rent more likely to complain.

MoominUnderWater · 21/05/2025 13:17

Can you run up and down your path 50x a day until it annoys your crazy neighbour as much as it's annoying you?

JustJoinedRightNow · 21/05/2025 13:24

Do what pp suggested but wear headphones and listen to music so it doesn't actually drive you crazy!

ERthree · 21/05/2025 13:46

Go and knock on the door and politely tell her that the alarm is going off when your visitors walk past and the noise is unacceptable. If she says tough say ok you will contact the council. Then walk away, do not engage further. Contact the council. But i bet she sorts it out.

This.
However, having dealt with a difficult neighbour before, take a friend or your nice neighbour with you as a witness.

PrincessASDaisy · 21/05/2025 13:57

I was about to suggest slipping an anonymous note under the door 😂

perhaps post it?

Trumptonagain · 21/05/2025 15:20

Is your neighbour out during the day or do they just ignore the fact that the alarm pisses you off?

Your choices are pretty limited really.

As said someone from council environment department may come out, at least they'd be able to hear it for themselves.

Not the best choice...but.....
If neighbour works every time the alarm goes off you could call their work, being the caring concerned neighbour you are, just to inform them.....Done in the hope it pisses off their work and in turn your neighbour as much as they do you.

End of tether choice....
Nice neighbours/you could invest in some inexpensive megaphones, or those kids loud microphones if you can still get them, and rush outside when your nutty neighbour is home, stand on the outside of their boundary and shout through them..."ya alarms going off"...
if they get the hump tell them they now know how you feel.

Ok panic over, I heard her talking to someone, I think the postman, and the alarm has now been switched off 🎉
