Keir Starmer went to private school

AIBU to be shocked that Keir Starmer went to private school? Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. So he enjoyed an excellent education which increased his social mobility and then wants to bring down the system that helped him, even when they gave him a 100% bursary so that his parents didn’t have to pay the fees?

This is from wiki:

Starmer passed the 11-plus examination and gained entry to Reigate Grammar School, which at the time was a voluntary-aidedselective grammar school.[1][12] The school converted into an independent fee-paying school in 1976, while he was a student. The terms of the conversion were such that his parents were not required to pay for his schooling until he turned 16, and when he reached that point, the school, by now a charity, awarded him a bursary that allowed him to complete his education there without any parental contribution.

I only found out about this today when I was googling the school for another reason and looked up the alumni. What a hypocrite. You didn’t hear about this in the election during all his “my father was a toolmaker” speeches.

Accepting freebies and the free state places is doing everyone else a favour.

I still want to know if tutors made their way into Lord Ali’s flat.

Why do you wan to know that?

Araminta1003 · 21/05/2025 19:48

Well at least he knows the meaning of a hairdresser. But then there are the glasses.

Nominative · 21/05/2025 19:51

The significant word there is "declared". He declared every penny he had ever received over a period of several years. We know perfectly well that, for instance, Johnson accepted well over £100K just for his hideous refurbishment of no. 10, to say nothing of the free holidays, honeymoon, wedding reception etc. He was simply a whole lot less scrupulous about declaring everything.

Dangermoo · 21/05/2025 19:57

Very entertaining reading this is. Those who dished it out incessantly when Boris was PM, now desperately protecting flip flop. They don't like it up em 😆 🤣

Araminta1003 · 21/05/2025 20:01

@DuncinToffee - because the press being supposedly disruptive just parked outside doesn’t quite stack up fully. DD is upstairs revising and I doubt a bit of press outside would disrupt her.
And if you are decimating private schools and the education of thousands of children and staff and grounds people losing their job, all whilst parking your son in a penthouse with private tutors dropping in, the public deserves to know. So I would like to know.

The media weren’t just parked outside. Surely you’ve seen how noisy and disruptive the press pack are on TV coverage?

Really?

I disagree that the public deserves to know if a politician's child (PM or MP) has a tutor or not. Next you will ask to see his son's grades or what he had for breakfast that morning.

And private schools are not decimated

That's irrelevant to the point I was making - although if you remember there was a drip, drip about what he and his wife had accepted and how it had been recorded. I don't think Starmer's popularity has recovered since. Not to mention that Johnson refunded the donor for the flat refurbishment in the end.

Wouldn't Starmer have been mostly campaigning and away from home touring the UK?

Araminta1003 · 21/05/2025 20:09

Well get some ear defenders for your DS then?
Other people are expected to pull their kids out of GCSE year and during A levels because of this VAT business, but his son cannot wear some ear defenders? Need to be shielded.
The hypocrisy of it all, is what stinks.

Araminta1003 · 21/05/2025 20:10

Of course he would have and therefore, one can reasonably speculate that perhaps a few tutors may have visited and it would have been a photo opportunity. That is why I want to know.

He didn’t pay back the cost of his wedding, honeymoon and the £100k of accommodation he accepted. Or all the deliveries of Daylesford goodies he was sent by the Bamfords.

Araminta1003 · 21/05/2025 20:11

Dad and Mum went to private school, son shielded from all disruption (minor disruption that is), but everyone else just has to suck it up!

I don’t think he took his kids on the campaign trail, did he?

So what, he didn't put VAT on private school fees either.

"No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets"

State school with tutors is OK. Just private school with PAYE teachers is apparently not.

What’s that got to do with freebies?

No, but the press were in the wrong place if Starmer was campaigning in Scotland or wherever.

DuncinToffee · 21/05/2025 20:17

Wow, wanting to give his son a place to study without press or ear defenders is now bad parenting?

All because of VAT Confused

LlynTegid · 21/05/2025 20:18

Why not debate the policies instead of where someone went to school? Sir Keir Starmer is not the best Prime Minister, but the alternative of the Tories is far worse.

No, he didn't. I don't think I've ever seen his kids.i think.he tries to keep them as private as possible .

CurlewKate · 21/05/2025 20:21

I really don’t want understand this thing about Starmer’s child going to Ali’s flat. Why shouldn’t he go to a family friend’s place to revise if for whatever reason he didn’t want to be at home? Any of us could do that! Is it just that it was a very expensive flat? Or am I missing something?

You’re not missing a thing. It’s the Tory obsession of attaching a financial value to everything. Hence knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing.

Actually he could have left at sixth form. But he chose to stay.

This isn't quite the 'gotcha' moment you think it is. You sound completely unhinged and stupid tbh.
