To hate showering when on period

meagain3 · 20/05/2025 09:28

I started a new contraception and have had on and off bleeding for 2 months (more like been bleeding for 7 weeks and had 1 off!) apparantly it’ll stop once it’s been around 3 months.

does anyone else hate showering when on period, obviously I still do but the quick rush out of the shower and having to then do a quick dry with the towel to get more knickers on without bleeding everywhere.

UGH maybe some people don’t have this problem but I bleed heavy so have to get a new pad on asap and don’t feel like I’m dry enough yet with a quick 30sec towel wipe!!!

also been sleeping in knickers for 7 whole weeks😒😒

I haven’t had a period for about 15 years due to been on a desogestrel pill and forgot that this even happens. I always used tampons but at some point when I had started I used pads. I honestly can’t remember what I did. I agree it’s bloody annoying. Mooncup or period pants to wear in the shower?

I 100% get this and it’s hard to feel fully clean as it rarely stops for long enough to get out of the shower and put a tampon in without an interim clean-up operation. Ugh.

why not put in a fresh tampon before you shower? You can shower with one after all.

GreenFressia · 20/05/2025 15:52

I just fold some loo roll as a temp thing and put knickers on then replace with a pad. Or if I'm using tampons I put one in straight away first.

isitmeamithedrama · 20/05/2025 16:00

@meagain3if you don’t fancy the cup could you wear a tampon just for the shower then change it when you’re out so that you don’t have to rush in the shower/getting dried

Branwells77 · 20/05/2025 17:45

A menstrual cup is definitely a game changer I used one for years and it was so much easier hope you get one and can manage to have a nice shower without having to rush afterwards, hope the bleeding settles down soon

I don't have this problem, but would you consider using a menstrual cup? You could put it in while you're still in the shower, then dry yourself afterwards. Similar with a tampon - turn shower off, insert tampon, have another rinse, then get out and dry yourself.

Why have I never thought of doing this??

Sorry for the TMI but my flow is so heavy that if the string gets wet then the blood just kind of flows down, it also makes a mess when I remove it so it doesn’t really benefit me much. But I totally get we’ve all got different methods, agh, being a woman is a nightmare sometimes!

So can I ask you experienced ladies a question, well 2, please.

  1. how do you get the cup out without a stalk and without spilling it everywhere?

  2. where do you dispose of the contents? Ie sink/toilet etc. then just pop it back in?

I have a little bit of stalk left on mine but really what you do is squish it a little bit, then you can get it out. Ideally you would be emptying it before it's completely full, and then you don't get as much/any spillage, though I would tend to do it hovering over the toilet anyway just in case. If you need to empty it when you're out, I'd normally prefer a toilet with the sink in the cubicle, then I'd pour the contents into the toilet, give it a rinse in the sink, and put it back in. If no sink in cubicle, just give it a wipe and put it back. At home, I'd disinfect it in boiling water maybe once a day.

If you have a high cervix, you may want to buy a longer model or leave more stalk on. Don't ask me how I know.

Marmite27 · 21/05/2025 09:01

I bought black reusable wipes. I stick one between my legs while I’m drying everywhere else, then use another to dry the specific area when everywhere else is dry.

I end up with blood all over my nice towels if I don’t. If it stains the reusable wipes you won’t be able to seen it, not that it matters anyway.

Try the cup - also life changing for me (well after many years on desogestrel with very little bleeding). Cost £15 3 years ago and I’ve spent nothing on sanpro since. I did have to cut off the stem completely and sand down the plastic, it’s very easy to remove and replace though once used to it (for me, understand everyone different). Only slight negative is the messiness of emptying/blood at the bottom of the toilet, but this is very minor compared to negatives of other methods (discomfort, risk of leaking, general messiness and grimness all the time!)

I absolutely hate using cups. Hard to get in, hard to get out

You sort of reach up and get the base of the cup and squish it together as you pull it out. I just empty it straight into the toilet and then rinse it out in the sink

I find them extremely hard to get in and out. Amd uncomfortable too

Im 5 foot 2 so im small.

theclampits · 21/05/2025 16:29

Op I have to use a special flannel whenever I get out the shower on my period or my towels would be ruined !

PinkGardenParty · 21/05/2025 16:31

ouch321 · 20/05/2025 09:42

That's the one disadvantage of external protection. I also used to worry about dirtying the towels so on getting out of the shower I'd use the bath towel for my top half and then wipe around my lower half with kitchen towel.

I always wondered what others do as I've never heard anyone mention having this issue.

Nb. Cups can be good but IME they're not without their downsides. For me it's interfering with the ability to use the loo.

Use a dark towel then wash it.

Have you tried any different ones?

The first one I tried i just couldn't get on with, my the next one I tried worked perfectly. The second one was much thinner silicone and more flexible.

I keep the stem as it is but I'm 5ft 11. I don't tend to use the stem though because I find it easier just to grab the base of the cup.

Had to use bog standard tampons last month because I came on unexpectedly on a weekend away and didn't have cup. My God, after 10 years of using a cup they were agony!!

Manthide · 21/05/2025 18:05

Always used to roll up toilet paper ready for when I was getting out of the shower. Thankfully I'm past all that now!

Maddy70 · 21/05/2025 19:04

Use a cup or tampon problem solved

ScandiStyle · 21/05/2025 20:05

@meagain3 If you don't want to stain the towel, keep a wad of loo paper or a few tissues next to the shower and use that to dry yourself as you get out.

Hankunamatata · 21/05/2025 20:19

Always used a cup or tampon. Love showering as gets rid of the yuck feeling. Got mirena and now no periods. Bliss.

Baconbuttymad · 12/11/2025 16:58

I have to shower each time I change my old or it grosses me out!
