To think your phone picks up on your conversations?

Lately, I’ve been feeling like my phone picks up on what I’m saying, even when I’m not actively using it. It’s weird how I’ll talk about something, and then suddenly, ads for that very thing will pop up. Has anyone else noticed this or am I just paranoid?

Most new phones do this. You can turn off the microphone I think.

ToKittyornottoKitty · 18/05/2025 21:43

Yeah it’s just a factual thing that smartphones do this, you can turn it off though.

TinyTempest · 18/05/2025 21:43

There was a thread about this a few hours ago.

YANBU.

Yes am 100%certain . Too much of a coincidence with the adds and definitely not anything Ihave googled!

Octavia64 · 18/05/2025 21:44

It’s not a secret that this happens, google how to turn it off if you don’t like it.

Creu · 18/05/2025 22:23

’Google how to stop Google from spying on you’ 😂

I don’t seem to get this but DP does, I must have changed the settings ages ago and have forgotten.

its v v v creepy though

No. There's a current thread where someone says her phone reads her thoughts, and gives the same type if examples as you. It's a mixture of coincidence, confirmation bias and actual ad targeting due to your online friends and your demographics.

This is incorrect.

This is incorrect.

What is incorrect? Are you claiming a phone can read your thoughts?

arethereanyleftatall · 18/05/2025 22:45

Of course they do?!? They have done for years.

This isn’t difficult to understand, nor is it a secret. Obviously a phone can’t read your thoughts, nobody is suggesting that, it can hear you talking, because it has permission to listen in due to Siri, Alexa etc. google it

AllTheWatersTurnedToClouds · 18/05/2025 22:47

This is not news! I thought everyone knew this by now?

PansyPottering · 18/05/2025 22:48

Yes definitely. My sister and I talk about completely random things like laser eye surgery when we are walking our dogs and then me ‘compete’ to see who gets some targeted advertising first.

Createausername1970 · 18/05/2025 22:49

Tech has to be listening to some degree otherwise it wouldn't hear you saying "Hey, Google" or "Alexa".

I do use them, but I am a bit unsure about them.

I'm confused. You said it was incorrect that a phone can't read your thoughts, now you are saying obviously a phone can't read your thoughts. So which is it?

No I think there is now technology using brain waves.

It’s your comprehension that’s the issue here. OP asked if your phone can pick up on your conversations, not ‘read minds’ and you said no, and I said that’s incorrect.

Ellephanting · 18/05/2025 22:52

We were out at a restaurant for dinner. On the tables they had some very pretty bottles filled with lights. I commented to DH about how pretty they looked and we briefly chatted about them. The next morning Amazon sent me an email suggesting I might like to buy one those pretty bottles with lights in. Too much of a coincidence?

PawsAndTails · 18/05/2025 22:59

I totally believe it. Ever since I talked, on the phone, to my mother about something I hadn't looked up or would in no way be targeted for, then immediately started getting online ads for that product, I believe the phone listens in to calls. Doesn't really bother me though.
