Sedation for Colonoscopy

Babylon32 · 18/05/2025 15:50

I have a colonoscopy Tuesday 9.45am. I’m a single mum to a 4 year old who I have to take to school Wednesday and I also have work. Would I be okay by Wednesday if I’m sedated? Or should I not have sedation? I’m hearing contradictory answers everywhere I turn.

You should be fine by Wednesday. The sedation doesn’t knock you out, but you won’t be able to drive home on Tuesday.

Orangemintcream · 18/05/2025 15:52

Do you have someone to collect you ? They will make you have someone to collect you if you choose to have it.

I don’t see why you wouldn’t be perfectly fine the following day though.

I drove the day after light sedation

Ahsheeit · 18/05/2025 15:58

You'll be fine by then.

Auburngal · 18/05/2025 16:34

You should be fine. Had a colonoscopy at the beginning of the month and drove the next day

ginasevern · 18/05/2025 16:40

I had one without sedation. I didn't have anyone to drive me and I didn't want to get a taxi home alone whilst still "out of it". I've got a fairly low bar when it comes to pain but apart from a few moments of very mild discomfort, it was fine. I had 3 polyps removed too. They did fit a cannula in case I changed my mind though, so there is that option.

Guidance is 24hr.

I actually felt like my memory still wasn’t quite right past that time although I was told there’s no way it would still be affecting me. It did for me though.

I was sedated for a colonoscopy as they thought they may need to do surgery at the time. I woke up in recovery and went to a ward for a couple of hours. My phone had died and the nurses were so busy I just walked to my sisters 15 mins away and felt totally fine and was fine the next day. I guess everyone's different but each time I've been sedated for minor ops I've felt okay the next day.

I had the same kind of sedation (same drug) to have a hernia repair under local anaesthetic. It has little to no lasting effects and within a few minutes of the procedure ending, I felt fine. The upside of the drug is that you feel a kind of euphoria as it wears off!

My daughter picked me up afterwards, but no issues at all with driving the next day.

Whoarethoseguys · 18/05/2025 16:59

You should be completely fine by Wednesday. The sedation wears of more or less straight away

Yes my mums gonna stay with me for the day and get my little girl from school if I don’t feel okay but the next day ideally I wanna be back to normal and get to work x

Had this procedure with sedation just last month - I was absolutely fine the following day. (Actually felt OK later the same day but obviously wouldn't have driven or anything and am aware people can react differently).

TheOriginalEmu · 18/05/2025 17:42

I didn’t have sedation because I had no one to drive me home, because I’ve had a hysterectomy and other pelvic surgery it hurt and I had gas and air instead.
but if you have someone to drive you home Tuesday you’ll be fine by Wednesday. So I’d get the sedation!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 18/05/2025 17:48

I was told no driving for 24 hours after sedation - if yours is the same your insurance would be invalid until that period has passed.

i was ok without anything- not even gas and air but each person and procedure is different so I’d have a contingency plan.

Greybeardy · 18/05/2025 18:07

Usual advice is 24 hours with sensible grown up, no driving/operating heavy equipment/signing important documents/being in sole charge of a child. Insurance will likely be invalidated by driving withing this time frame even if you feel fine.

I work from home and my daughter will be in school, so all should be okay :)

As a veteran of many colonoscopies (IBD) I’d advise you to get the sedation. After mine I shake it off fairly easily and my DH and I take the bus home. After a little nap I’m usually fine, and definitely fine the next day

worldwidetravel2017 · 19/05/2025 08:10

Its 24 hrs after you cant drive etc

I was exhausted the day after
