Do you lose weight or put on after hospital.

Hi,

Recently home from hospital after 3 weeks and put on a night dress that felt a little tight before I’d been in to find it now acceptable.

Whilst I’ll try and get weighed in the next couple of days, I just presumed you put on weight after hospital, to me they always seemed to come round to get the next meal choices (which I knew I couldn’t refrain from) and I was always drinking lots of water and having a hot drink on each run which they really didn’t like making without milk as I found out a few times.

But I got a few bits delivered I really fancied from the co op by what I’ve also known to be a McDonald’s driver in the past and he looked a bit taken aback this afternoon, mind I am quite white in colour in the face and still don’t need help with laxatives to put it like that.

If you lose weight is that to do with muscle mass loss? Or can you swing from one to other really quickly? so be careful what happens next kind of thing.

I also have a falls watch recording step count around the home, ex fit bit wearer and today I’m heading for 1k but my friend reckons that is my iPhone showing on fit bit, though message comes up that can’t sync fit bit, which may have had its day working properly just before all this.
I can’t see Careline 365 do an actual app for step count.

What on earth does this mean?

You’ve been sick. People often lose weight when they are seriously ill whether at home or in the hospital.

I personally have a horrible time finding safe food to eat in hospital. They are awful at dealing with oddball allergies. Ending up there unexpectedly can mean simply not being fed.

I recently spent over 3 weeks in hospital and lost a lot of weight. I don't know how much but it's very noticeable. I understand this is normal after a period of serious illness.

RebelliousHoping · 17/05/2025 20:14

Thank you, I tried to help myself with the food, didn’t refuse to eat just felt a black coffee was best when feeling sick but every so often they’d say please take milk and I accept why. Eat a mixture of warm meals and sandwiches towards end clearing my plate, always bran flakes in mornings as I found they no longer served toast only as a one off treat when possible. I knew if I didn’t keep the eating up they had the picc line food stuffs could go down.

There was a couple of days when I had cake and chocolate whilst in there but I guess where I’m not having any alcohol these days, I’m not knocking back empty calories either.

Just find in interesting. Thank god there are apps now for these shop to door services.

Could it have been like the big blood tests they were taking. The volume of blood out.

I've only been in hospital long enough to notice a difference twice.

The first was giving birth so I lost about 25lb which doesn't really count

The second was an emergency admission to have a necrotic dermoid cyst the size of a grapefruit removed, and I also lost an ovary and tube. I was in for a week, and didn't eat much at all. I was on a lot of morphine so I drank water and slept. I was off sick for a further 6 weeks and still didn't have much of an appetite so I dropped a dress size.

If you are immobile, you'll lose muscle tone. And if you're on drugs you'll probably lose your appetite. Plus hospitals are so hot and stuffy, that tends to put me off eating.

Mirroar · 17/05/2025 20:32

It depends what you're in for, how long for, and if you've been able to be mobile whilst in or not. Either way often it's about getting through it in hospital rather than worrying about it.

When I was in I was made to put weight on because I was sectioned! I managed to eat the ward meals 3x a day for five weeks. There was only four things from the menu I could eat so it was certainly massively tedious! I did order sushi once though. I only worked out delivery meals right at the end?!
I'd say most people would lose because they're not well enough to eat much or if an operation they'd be NBM for a while. Also the food sucks obviously.

RebelliousHoping · 21/05/2025 11:19

Thank you all.

I made the scales this morning, think I’m 15 stone 7lb surprisingly. (good no gain) even with leg bandaged up.

OP I mean this kindly: if you think having blood tests and drinking lots of water will make you gain weight then I think you need to read up on nutrition.

feelingbleh · 21/05/2025 11:34

I always gained weight in hospital when I'm in there weeks/months. Firstly because I'm hardly moving but also I was having 3 meals a day 2 with desserts. I would never eat that much at home but it broke up the day and helped with boredom

Greybeardy · 21/05/2025 11:59

OP your multiple posts about this recent hospital stay are barely coherent and you really would be better off getting advice from the people who actually know you rather than people on line who are trying to piece together what's clearly a complex situation with very little useful information.

People can lose or gain weight in hospital and that weight change can be due to changes in fluid/muscle/fat. Whether someone's weight change is a serious problem and how it should be managed depends on the details of what's been going on - if you're worried you need to speak to whoever's most closely involved in supporting you now you're out of hospital.
