Feel like giving up with my Maldives trip! I am SO confused by it all...!!

I am planning a special trip to the Maldives in July, for my partner and I. It is to celebrate my Birthday :)

We are flying our from Dubai, x10 nights - and have already booked our flights on a non-cancellation rate (as they were so much more affordable!!)

I know it was VERY naive of me, but I didn't think it would be even half as hard as it is proving to be, to find somewhere to stay!

My partner doesn't fly well at the best of times, so he'd really like to avoid the sea plane. He's fine with boats, so we are happy to use ferries or speed boats.

I am looking for somewhere not too costly, since we are usually out and about / on trips during the day, so we aren't fussed about luxury or all inclusive. Ideally B&B or 1/2 board would suit us well.

Can anybody recommend a LOCAL island with great ferry / speedboat transfer links, please?

Having tried to look up the transport info online for the public ferries from Male, its proving nearly impossible and I'm almost at the stage now where it would be considerably less stressful to just give up and try again somewhere more simple 😅

Thank you. I am finding options, but I am then finding it extremely hard to figure out how to actually GET to the islands after landing in Male. That's the problem we have. And because we are limited to the fact we cannot use a sea plane, the ferry and speed boat routes are not clearly published anywhere (from what I can see!)

Pretty much all Maldives resorts give you a price inclusive of transfers. I work for a tour operator and all of our do. Depending on how far they are from MLE its speedboat or seaplane or domestic flight and speedboat. I have been to the Maldives and its a beautiful place.

It really is the most boring place. Everyone was in bed by nine when I did a season repping there. I had a wonderful season on the Seychelles but Maldives was all honeymoon couples

We stayed at villa park (was sun island) and there was entertainment every night but it was much more aimed at family groups tbh.

Borracha · 17/05/2025 18:09

If you’re not looking for luxury and wanting to be out and about in the daytime, the Maldives feels like a weird choice.

We live in Dubai too, so totally get wanting a change of scenery/weather but would you not be better going somewhere like Sri Lanka. Cyprus would also be a good bet in June and it’s only around a 4hr flight (Whizz Air from AUD or Cyprus Air from dXB is much cheaper than flying EK)

@pinkysmamma have a look at ‘thetravelmum’ on Instagram she went to Maldives and explored the local island cheap and showed how to travel from one to another etc. I’ve just checked and if you check she’s got a highlight!

LostFirstTimeMummy2025 · 17/05/2025 18:11

Hard rock or sail lagoon? Not sure if they’re in budget but are a short speed boat ride from Male

@pinkysmamma I get you. We live in Riyadh and love a downpour on holiday 😂

Don’t we all!

We’re just a big bunch of holiday weather weirdos. 🤣

I've been to The Maldives at the start if August and it didn't rain all the time, the odd shower overnight or late afternoon. One day of heavy rain, lots of cloud on the horizon. I think that aspect will be fine.

Maybe this blog will help. Most of the resort islands are very much honeymoon hotels.

Nopayrise · 17/05/2025 18:18

There are lot of Maldives holidaymaker FB groups. Join one of those and ask but yes I don’t think you actually want a local island and the speedboats will be connected to the hotels etc

SheridansPortSalut · 17/05/2025 18:22

It might no be for you. It's an odd choice of location if you like to be out and about / on trips during the day and aren't fussed about luxury or all inclusive. That's what they specialise in.

CubanTody · 17/05/2025 18:22

If you're happy with a resort rather than a local island then Embudu Village is only a short speed boat trip from Male and is very budget friendly. The snorkelling there is second to none.

Lovetocook49 · 17/05/2025 18:22

We went in April , it wasn’t a sea plane but a smaller plane to the different airport, as south lots of cheaper options.

we flew Male to Velana , its 1 1/2 hors then 10 minute speed boat to Canareef resort

CubanTody · 17/05/2025 18:25

Meant to add, if you book a resort they will sort out your transfers for you.

Laughinglama · 17/05/2025 18:26

Personally i would recommend AI we went AI upon recommendation although before covid and a can of coke was $8 water was about $5 and food was $$$. We went to vilamenhoo however thats a seaplane transfer.

onwards2025 · 17/05/2025 18:30

The hotels/islands themselves will sort a boat for you - find one you like then email them to ask and arrange it, they are used to helping with airport transfers

AnonyMuse · 17/05/2025 18:32

I suggest you visit the Tripadvisor Maldives forum. If you type “best local island” into the search bar and list the results under relevance rather than date, that will bring up a number of threads which I think you will find helpful (eg which refer to guesthouses on local islands making the transfer arrangements for you). Although I am a frequent visitor to the Maldives, we have only stayed on resort islands, so I can’t help as regards local islands (ie where Maldivians live).
Are you aware that no alcohol or pork products are permitted on local islands and that modest dress is required except on designated “bikini” beaches? Resort islands (generally a single hotel occupies a whole island) serve alcohol and pork and normal holiday beachwear is fine.
There are some much cheaper resorts. I suggest you visit the Travel Republic site, limit your search to speedboat transfers and arrange by lowest price. I suggest going at least half board - restaurant prices in resort islands are very high and you are a captive audience, as there are no other outlets on the island.
Kurumba has been mentioned on this thread, but it is far too close to Male and the reef is totally dead there. I found it rather depressing. Bandos is also far too close to Male and massively overbuilt.
Once you’ve got a feel for what you’re looking for, I suggest you start a thread on the Tripadvisor Maldives forum and the highly knowledgeable folks there will provide ideas ( but bear in mind that there are only a few contributors who regularly visit local islands so it is a better source of information on resort islands).

RatherBeOnVacation · 17/05/2025 18:35

We stayed on a really remote island for the first week of our holiday and then had a second week at the Hard Rock Hotel which is on the “Crossroads” - a couple of linked islands with three hotels, lots of restaurants and activities and only 15 mins by speedboat. The boats are on a schedule as locals from Male also head there. It was ridiculously easy to get to.

https://crossroadsmaldives.com

Some people poo poo it as you can see Male from there and say it spoils the vibe. Simple solution is to request accommodation that faces the other way, or embrace the fact that accommodation facing it is significantly cheaper!!!!!!

We had a fabulous time - a stark contrast to the more honeymoon island we went to first, but if you’re looking for easy and more affordable would recommend. All the hotels were good.

Oh, and I meant to say, don’t be too offput by this being the “rainy” season. The pattern in this (low) season tends to be that there are several weeks of relatively dry weather (occasional showers, sometimes intense, often at night), followed by about a week of pretty wet/cloudy and windy weather. But as you’re going for 10 days, you’d be most unlucky not to get at least a few days of lovely sunny weather. We almost always go in low season for 10 days and have had several trips where it hasn’t rained at all in the daytime and only one trip where it was really wet for several days in a row.

Oisonous · 17/05/2025 18:45

This couple are doing Maldives on a budget and staying on local islands - might give you an idea of what it might be like not on a big all inclusive

FunnyRaven · 17/05/2025 18:49

you definitely don’t want an Airbnb or local island. All inclusive resort for Maldives.

Saisong · 17/05/2025 18:50

We also went to Bandos, and given the proximity to Male we were able to make a few out-and-about trips. Twice sightseeing/shopping to Male, then a locals island, an uninhabited island with a beach picnic and to a Sandals resort. We also did a lot of diving, and failing that, snorkeling straight off the beach outside the villa. Evenings we would stroll around the island before dinner to watch the sunset. We had a choice of restaurants or bar options (didn't go AI). There was also plenty of sports - tennis and watersports etc during the day. We didn't get bored as a couple, don't think I'd bother with kids though.

When it rains it comes down in stair rods, though that was mainly at night when we were there.

BustingBaoBun · 17/05/2025 18:57

@pinkysmamma

Have you tried this? We went to Maldives for 5 days at the end of a cruise and they really know their stuff. Given there are thousands of atolls, we were quite specific as to what we wanted and they delivered.

We went several years ago on a girlie few days away and stayed at the Centara Ras Fushi (I think it was). Flights,.transfers and accomodation were all booked through a Dubai travel agent but don't have his details anymore (2 of us were in Dubai, 1 in Kuwait and 1 in an Asian cruise). It was a shortish speed boat ride from Male which as I don't travel well was just about manageable.

whenitsover · 17/05/2025 19:03

I would look at baros, an excellent resort only 30 mins away by speedboat from male. House reef, great dining options and I think adult only x
