Working as a carer

I care for someone who I occasionally take shopping in my car, I haven’t for a while because he is able to go and do some shopping on his own. He told me he has bed bugs. It’s normally when he wants to get a big shop, he brings his own bags plus a rucksack. I expressed my concerns to my company I work for and they said the bugs don’t live on people, which I know, but, they could be on clothing or his bag.
should I refuse to take him shopping in my?

Yes you can refuse. Bedbugs survive long haul flights hiding in suitcases and people bring them into their home. Has the client had someone out to fumigate his house? Has your work contacted his social worker? He must have a lot of bites which will be very uncomfortable for him.

The company have informed his family, he doesn’t have a social worker. I think the council charge for pest control so not sure what they are going to do.
I feel bad because I think he will be a bit upset and think I am being mean but I really am not comfortable with it.

I would expect him to pay plastic bags. If not I would say no. The company should handle it for you.

Yes I thought about the plastic bags but still worried about his clothing.
Thank you for your advice.

Can you do the big shop for him until pest control have been?

And I’d also chase up pest control yourself if you have the time, they are normally quite quick

No way should you take him shopping! I would offer to do his shop if he gives you a list , and tell him you would be buying plastic bags when you were there, not using his cloth ones. I wouldn’t want him in my car. It was in the news not long ago that people were catching them from public transport and they are a nightmare to get rid of. I might sound heartless but I wouldn’t want to go in his house if I was you. I don’t have the money to spend getting pest control into my house getting rid of bedbugs that I picked up because of my job nor would I want my family to suffer because of it.
