Landlord annoyed. Moving

TheGreenJoker · 17/05/2025 01:12

I have signed a new contract for a council house
I was on a one year contract for my private rent house and I have been here 2 years
The landlord said I said I was staying here long term??? I didn’t say as I knew I was looking for other places and he said I verbally agreed to stay longer ?
I have a tenancy agreement but it was only for a year? And I have been here 2.
Can he do anything or not? I get he’s annoyed I’m leaving but I haven’t done anything wrong legally have I I?
Thank you

It’s none of his business where you move. Two years is a long time. He’s probably annoyed as you are a good tenant and he doesn’t want to lose you but you need to put yourself first. The council property will give you security.

But legally I haven’t done anything wrong right? Like with paperwork and tenancy agreements etc?

presumably the tenancy agreement states the notice period required?
Beyond that he can't do anything.
From some of the posts on here you could have ended up waiting years for a council house.
enjoy your new home.

And it’s not like I have signed a new tenancy agreement or something?

You haven’t done anything wrong. Just give the required notice and move out

KnickerFolder · 17/05/2025 01:24

You will still have to give notice in accordance with your contract and pay rent until the end of the notice period. If your fixed term has expired and you pay rent monthly, usually you have to give 1 month’s notice, ending on the last day of a rental period (ie the day before your rent is usually due). Have you given the correct notice?

I pay my rent on the 1st of the month so when would I give notice please? I have the keys for the council house already.
but I understand I am gonna be paying rent on both properties but unsure when to give my notice on this house please?

He’s annoyed because he now has to advertise for a new tenant, and there may be a period where he’s going to shoulder the cost of the rent if he can’t find anyone to move in the day after you move out. As long as you have fulfilled your obligations under the contract, you are good. Enjoy your new council house, I hope you will be happy. 🙂👍

Read your contract. You give notice as soon as you like and pay rent until the end of your notice period.

KnickerFolder · 17/05/2025 01:39

You need to check your contract but, usually, if you pay rent on the first of the month, you would give notice to end on 30/31 of the month. So you would give notice at the end of this month to leave on 30 June. You might be able to negotiate with the landlord that if he can let the property before then, he only charges rent until the new tenant moves in. He may agree if you let him have access to the property to do work etc. If he won’t agree, he can’t let the property until after 30 June. Don’t hand back the keys before then!

Then is is the last time I pay the 1st June? Even if I leave the 30th please?

Your tenancy agreement will say how much notice you have to give. Even though it was a one year contract, it will probably say it's a rolling contract so you still have to give notice.

You will need to check what your contact says.

If it's 30 day's notice and you give notice today, you would pay a pro-rated amount on the first of June and be out 30 days from when you have your notice.

If it's a calendar month and you give notice today, you would pay June's rent in full and need to be out by the end of June.

redastherose · 17/05/2025 02:10

If I am reading what you’ve written correctly you had a 1 year tenancy that expired a year ago and haven’t signed another tenancy agreement. If that’s the case you will most probably have gone onto a rolling month to month tenancy and, if so, then you would usually need to give 1 month’s notice on the day you usually pay your rent for the next month and you leave at the end of that month. So if you usually pay on the 1st of each month you would give notice on the 1st June and you would have to vacate on or before the 30th June.

This is correct (I work in this field) but also check with your contract

DonewhatIcando · 17/05/2025 11:01

Exactly what @redastherosesaid but read your contract to check what notice you have to give.
If you already have the keys to your new property you can start doing it up, cleaning and moving some stuff over (make sure you have insurance on the new property)
Ignore the landlord, he just wants his rental income, he's annoyed, tough!
Enjoy your new home
