AIBU to request a hysterectomy?

2 years ago I tested positive for HPV after a smear, had a colposcopy, had complications and lost more than half my blood and passed out while having chest compressions - a terrifying experience which still haunts me.

Last year, I was HPV positive again and had a private colposcopy which was scary but thankfully uneventful.

I've just tested positive again (despite having negative tests after colposcopies) and as I'm halfway through my fifties and babies aren't going to feature in my future I feel that if I have a hysterectomy then there won't be a cervix to worry about any more!

Added to that, I had a mirena coil inserted in 2018 which has become embedded in my womb lining so will likely need surgery to remove at some point anyway...

I'm waiting for a GP appointment so they can refer me for private treatment so it will actually save NHS money in the long run.

Do you think this is a reasonable request?

OP I'm not sure why you are asking us here rather than your gynaecologist. It's best to get medical advice from a professional.

MillyMoo1113 · 15/05/2025 13:14

Completely reasonable! I really want one as well, similar problems to what you’ve had, and just want it all gone really!

I am asking a medical professional if you read my post, I'm waiting for a GP appointment to be referred. I'm just worrying in the meantime that they might say no, so was looking for experiences.

I'm not medical, but would 100% consider that a reasonable request. Sending good wishes & fingers crossed for you.

Reasonable but you will very likely not get it.

I've had/have colposcopies, LLETZ x 2, fibroids, cysts, burst cysts, irregular bleeding requiring investigations 5 times, 3 x actual cancer red button hit scares, scarring from PID that's painful.

Requested a hysterectomy because I literally cannot function every time I have a new scare and was fobbed off because I dont meet the threshold 🙄

I'm sorry to hear that, sounds like you're really going through it.
Can I ask though, was that through NHS? When I mentioned it to my GP after my second test she laughed in my face 🙄 As I'm going private this time I'm hoping it'll improve my chances...

yes I had a hysterectomy at 39

I developed very bad periods and PMT in my 30s ( I had undiagnosed endo and adenomyosis, only found on histology afterwards) I had a ablation first that caused a bad infection which caused my uterus to seal up and collect blood, that needed an op to fix, then I had pain from scar damage so had the hysterectomy, no questions asked, i had cysts on ovaries so had them out too, and went onto HRT.

Its been great

Perfectly reasonable and I can’t see any private gynaecologist not agreeing with you . Have you checked with your private provider that they actually need a referral as they often do not and you can crack on without the GP appointment.

Unfortunately they won't do anything without a GP referral. I'm not in a huge hurry as I've got too many plans for the summer so am hoping to book in for September.

Yes NHS.

If you go private they'll do it, think I was quoted around 7k. You don't always need a gp referral, I didn't. Am currently saving up for it 😊

HPV alone isn’t uncommon. Would a hysterectomy remove all chances of cancer due to HPV?

AfricanGreen · 15/05/2025 14:50

Guys, I got a hysterectomy through BENENDEN semi private healthcare.

15 quid a month for six months, then you can see a gynaecologist. For some reason this operation is fully covered by BENENDEN, despite the normal treatment level being £1,800.

If you go on the NHS it will take YEARS womens services are horrific.

I had my first invitation to a gynae appt a full YEAR after BENENDEN had whipped mine out.

Please give it a look!

I've got private healthcare through work so it's not the cost which is the issue, it's just that I need my NHS GP to refer me. If she won't then I can contact the doctor service through the private healthcare company and see if they can help...
