GCSE exam finished early. What can I do?

CAMHShelp · 14/05/2025 15:15

DDs GCSE exam was 1 hour and 45 mins. The invigilator asked the kids if they had finished to which DD replied yes, as she had answered all the questions (ASD) but planned to use remain 20 mins to check answers. They immediately took the paper away and ended the exam early as she was the last one to stop writing.
I have made a complaint to the school but they are being dismissive and fobbing me off.
What can I do?

The girl also has ASD. The whole picture does not present to me cynically.

Why are you talking about a state of panic?

As an academic, I never mentioned any such thing.

In any case, there is enough here for an exam board rather than MumsNet to arbitrate

Tristan5 · 19/05/2025 14:15

I don’t believe the invigilator did any such thing…..

Why not? I work in exams and have seen plenty such things go wrong. As stated the invigilator is a TA not a dedicated invigilator.

also, as has been stated to you so many times - she was home before the scheduled end time of exams. Yes, schools can choose to let you leave earlier but majority of schools policy is you need to stay for the end time of the exam to stop disruption.

at the end of the day not sure why you have just decided to make things up in your head - do you do this often?

Perhaps I know more of the background…..

You are claiming to be the invigilator? Hmm.

Difficult to see how. An academic, as you claim above, implies HE. So either not part of the school staff, or you were exaggerating earlier.

On the highly remote chance that you have a DC and a friend has confided in them about telling a lie concerning an identical incident, it is not beyond the bounds of coincidence. And regardless, coming onto MumsNet to break the confidence of your child’s friend is twattish behaviour. Not that I am inclined to believe this.

Jesus, what a wild, nonsensical reply, quite incredible, and more than a little amusing!!

So what do you know that we don’t know? Why not just say it instead of speaking in riddles

Why are you implying you have information but not sharing it. It’s very weird. Regardless, things like this do happen when people who aren’t fully trained are involved. It’s likely to happen more with current funding and staffing issues in schools.

Has it occurred to you that I can’t share it?

Why are you so bothered?

Go and chill, have a glass of wine and watch Eastenders! 👍

GrammarTeacher · 19/05/2025 19:31

I am watching EastEnders actually. But no to the wine on a school night.

I’m no more bothered than you as it happens.

I would have said younger than that

The exam was 1 hour 45 minutes plus the dd had extra time due to ASD.

The exam finished 20 minutes early.

Did the exam finish after 1 hour 25 minutes?

Or did the exam finish after 1 hour 45 minutes and the dd could not use her extra 20 minutes (ASD) time?

Or something else?

CaptainMyCaptain · 19/05/2025 20:27

The OP has said she didn't have extra time.

HardyCrow · 20/05/2025 10:15

gcsesargh · 14/05/2025 15:43

No they’re not allowed to do this. I invigilate and I’m amazed at some of the things I read on here ( and other forums). They are so strict at the schools I work at and we have loads of training.

Absolutely agree - this is shocking. I was a senior invigilator for years - would never dream of doing such a thing - my experience is mostly uni level -so there can be slight variation between institutions - but GCSES are nationally regulated and my daughter is doing hers right now - I would be reading her exam centre the riot act if they tried a stunt like this.

HardyCrow · 20/05/2025 10:26

Tiswa · 14/05/2025 16:30

Is this extra time or the actual exam?

This is not relevant to the invigilator's messing up because extra time is not optional if it is awarded - it is the length of the exam for that particular person.
