To accuse my neighbour’s dog or could this be fox poo?

Warning: poo image attached! We have an ongoing issue with a neighbour in our block who sometimes lets their dog in the communal garden despite a no dog rule. We previously complained when they let their dog poo there last year and they did clean it up and promised it wouldn’t happen again. However, the owner occasionally accompanies the dog for an early morning walk through the garden.

We spotted this poo on the lawn today, but we do live next to a forest area where there are foxes, etc. Does this look like fox or dog poo? We don’t want to have a go at the neighbour if it’s fox poo but I can’t tell the difference. Anyone know better?

I have got a life, thankyou. We have a gated communal garden and only one flat in the block with a dog. So it’s definitely not a random dog getting into the garden. And as I mentioned earlier, they have form for this, previously admitted it and claimed they didn’t know their unsupervised dog was shitting its guts out all round the communal gardens. So I think there’s sufficient evidence…

Okay, I'll bite.... scuse the pun!

You clearly don't have enough evidence though do you?
e.g. the poo could be from a fox, other wildlife, another dog sneaking in through the perimeter, or one of your other neighbours (e.g. someone maybe had a visitor with a dog or whatever), or this neighbour who previously didn't clean up their dog's poo apparently)

How about suggesting to the resident's association putting up a fairly prominent sign reminding garden users to clean up dog foul, etc.

And only confront your neighbours when you actually know it's them and their dog.

millymollymoomoo · 17/05/2025 12:22

What sort of dog is it?

smallish and it could be dog poo
larger breed I’d say too narrow and more likely fox poo

I think it’s a pug or something very similar

All good points. But I’m 95% sure now that it is the neighbour’s dog. We are surrounded on 3 sides by forest and the garden is gated so it’s not a random passing dog. And ALL the other residents are extremely respectful of the no dogs rule and don’t let visits being dogs into the premises. The neighbours with the dog are entitled and obnoxious and despite previous PROVEN incidents of letting their dog foul the garden, and agreeing not to let it out there, they are seen walking it round the garden at very early times when they probably think everyone else is asleep!

It is an ongoing issue, this isn’t just a one-off and we have asked them multiple times to resist. It’s the lack of respect and consideration that really bugs me, when they know how much it is upsetting people.

Please do accuse the dog and let us know what he says

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 17/05/2025 19:45

That isn't the right colour or texture for a poo from my Pug, and that would be 2 poo's worth not just one poo.
but of course it depends on what the dog is fed, and how often.

so it's really hard to say

tho i would suggest it is not from a Labrador size dog.

How do so many of us know what fox poo smells like - simply because it seems to be sooooooooo attractive to dogs and they bloody well like to roll in it !!! with such fucking happiness you would think it was Christmas !!!

I am no longer blessed to be owned by a Beagle, for me she was the worst offender.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 17/05/2025 19:48

If you are in a wooded area, it could be a bear (see figure 1.) 🐻
I read somewhere that what bears do... and I think Pope too, rather bizarrely - or is that something different?

Without something to scale against, it’s hard to tell. But overall, it looks quite dark to me compared to my dog’s poo, but that could be entirely due to diet.

But as others have said, fox poo has a very distinctive smell, which is extremely hard to get rid of if your dog rolls in it 🤮

Ketchup is the answer to getting the smell of your dog.

My neighbour opens her door everytime I dare enter the garden with my dog ( on lead) in her the communal garden. We've been living here a year and she's done nothing but bully me. Then she tried the nicey nicely approach.
We are very respectable people, always clean up after our dog and he rarely poos in the garden as he's always going on walks, she stands there and watches and it puts me on edge. Sorry to derail the thread but please don't accuse your neighbour until you know for sure...

ChorizoDog · 18/05/2025 10:11

I don’t think you should accuse your neighbour who has previously owned up and corrected their mistake. Innocent until proven guilt and all that.

if you did not see her dog actually do it, you’ve got no place to go about accusing.

Im glad I’m not your neighbour.

But why do you let your dog poo in the communal garden EVER? Surely you can control your dog enough for a few minutes to get him off the premises? Dog urine damages the lawn, dog poo leaves a residue even if you pick it up. No one wants their children playing in a garden that a dog messes in. Doesn’t sound very respectful to me.

I completely get being annoyed that a neighbour is letting their dog using the communal garden as a loo, but when you have no evidence beyond a random turd in the garden then you need to leave your neighbour alone unless you have proof (I.e see it’s actually her dog!)

ThatDaringEagle · 19/05/2025 11:07

Op, If you (or your gardiner) place a large clear plastic bottle of water (1.5 - 2L) on it's side on the lawn the dog is unlikely to want to poo there afaik.

The whole starting point of my thread was that I did NOT want to accuse the neighbour unless I could at least be sure it was dog poo. I haven’t confronted her nor do I plan to do so. But we have raised it with the building management company and asked them to write to ALL residents and remind them that dogs must not foul the garden. Thus not singling anyone out.

Hopefully that will finally get the message across to the person responsible.

Ill tell you why -
Because I have as much right to use the communal garden as anyone else - I clean my dogs poo up and most of importantly my tenancy states I can do.
He hardly goes in the garden and when he does how can I stop him using it whilst walking through to get to somewhere anyway?
You would like my horrible nasty neighbours who just want any reason to dislike us 😄

YOU have the right to use the communal garden, your dog does not. You may have permission in your tenancy agreement to have a dog residing in your flat, that does not mean you have permission to allow your dog to mess or even be in, the communal gardens, unless specifically stated. It’s extremely common for communal gardens to be declared dog-free, whether council or private.

Unless you are otherwise un-neighbourly, I imagine the sole reason your neighbour dislikes you is because your dog shits in the garden, that would be reason enough for me…

Fox, IMHO, looks quite a pointy tip on the right hand piece.

Use Animology Fox Poo shampoo. Game changer. I do still usually shampoo my dog twice, but he smells like shampoo afterwards which is a relief!

Actually - I asked my housing association tenancy officer because I was getting bullied by a neighbour ( which I'm thinking is you now 🤔🤣)
And they said it is fine, providing he is on a lead ( which he is) so yes myself, my husband and my lovely dog is permitted to go in the communal garden.

UPDATE: IT WAS THE NEIGHBOUR’S DOG!! Owner fessed up to the management company and apologised. It has been reiterated to them that it mustn’t happen again so hopefully that’s the end of it. No confrontations, no drama, no bullying. (Sorry, but all the fox spotters were wrong on this occasion 🙂)

I was probably the first to agree that it was likely to be Dog. But due to the overwhelming opposing response of others I was starting to wonder if my 4 dogs producing similar specimens were foxes in disguise!

(One of my dogs is an expert fox poo roller and it is almost daily at this time of year - cubs?)

I hope you get to keep a clean lawn in the future.
