Found this tuft of fur in my garden - what did it come from?

Found this tuft of fur in my garden this morning. Anyone know what it came off?

We live on a quiet cul de sac. The last road before you hit countryside. Garden is hedged on three sides and I know foxes find a way in. We hear al sorts at night.

I have a dog but he is always supervised (you don’t want to know why). He’s also black so not from him.

Cat? Dropped by a bird?

Its 9 cm or so long

I expect a bird dropped it. They found it somewhere and were taking it to line a nest with but didn't make it!

ItGhoul · 14/05/2025 13:11

That’s from a pony that’s had its mane/forelock/feathering trimmed.

JDM625 · 14/05/2025 13:11

Ok, you caught me! 😳

I was having a LONG overdue bikini tidy up whilst sitting in the garden.

We do live next to stables

I guarantee you there is a small elderly white pony there and a small girl or boy who loves using a shedding rake.

this is not worthy of an x files episode.

Santa's beard. He shaves it off for the summer and starts re-growing it in September.

He was probably riding his sleigh over your house on his way to Benidorm while removing the face fluff.

Nomello · 14/05/2025 13:15

I know it’s a boring question but I was curious

Looks like the e top of a fox’s tail to
me. The tail fur is the first to go if a fox gets mange.

Einstein.

Boris Johnson as an outside possibility.

Oh God that did make me laugh. Thank you

I think somebody's been brushing their golden retriever, put the fur out as nesting material, and a bird has picked it up but dropped a clump in your garden.

It's this. I do the same.

TheHillsIsLonely · 14/05/2025 13:37

My garden is fairly secure, we didn’t have foxes for years but I think they have found a gap somewhere.

They don't need a gap. Foxes are good climbers and can easily get over a 6ft fence.

Is your husband having an affair with an older women? Maybe that got a bit carried away al fresco. I would LTB just in case.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 14/05/2025 13:50

That does look more like horse mane/tail clippings than dog fur.

We put dog wool out but it looks like this. The birds do take it.

I think you've found your answer 😃
Ignore those talking the Mickey.

That definitely looks like Golden fur (I had 4!) Looks like someone’s been brushing their Goldie and a bird’s dropped it.
I leave out our fur for the birbs and they absolutely love it - it’s usually gone in minutes. There’s some particularly industrious sparrows that will make off with clumps bigger than their own wee selves, it’s fascinating. I only leave it out because ours aren’t treated with worm or tick stuff though.

For sure, the sparrows are obsessed with dog fur, they love it! We watch them collecting it.

Polar Bear obviously

But no, its likely a bird dropped it. We brush our cat outside in the garden and the birds regularly take her fur tufts that come out.

Fun fact: polar bear fur is transparent, and their skin is dark brown/black!

I cut my dads hair last week and it looks just like this! I threw it out in the garden, maybe birds picked it up for a nest and dropped it!

Proof of the Yeti

I was going to say the same. But when they test it they will find out it's actually a bear ,( it's always a bear! ).

Sorry but that made me laugh 😆 Zebedee999! 😁

Perhaps you should ask him to check?
