We’re a family of five and, for one reason or another, have used our GP surgery fairly regularly over the past eight months or so. Not much before this, but it’s just been one thing after another recently. They have an online system for asking for medical help or admin assistance (much easier to use than the telephone number) and we’ve used this for appointments, prescriptions, GP letters etc. and always got what we needed quickly. I thought it would be nice to drop off a box of biscuits or something for the staff room as a thank you as the surgery (and surgeries in general) get a lot of bad press, but they’ve really helped us out a lot lately. My husband thinks this is OTT and they’re just doing their jobs. So, would this be a nice gesture or is it weird?

I think it would be a lovely thoughtful gesture. Also maybe leave a Google review/ positive feedback on the surgery website?

They get paid nothing extra required

Cherry8809 · 14/05/2025 09:32

I think it’s a sweet gesture, and one they would appreciate 😊

Sahara123 · 14/05/2025 09:51

Yes, I’ve done this before, my surgery really are amazing. I know they get paid but everyone likes to be appreciated.

I've done this (receptionist stayed 30m past her finish time to make sure I got some medication). Yes, they get paid, but everyone likes positive feedback. Personally I would appreciate a card probably more, but sure biscuits would go down well and it would be nice to share with their colleagues

Goldengirl123 · 14/05/2025 11:28

I work in a GP surgery and we are always so grateful for a thank you card. A box of biscuits is a good idea

NeedToChangeName · 14/05/2025 11:29

Thank you cards go up in the surgery noticeboard and boost morale. I'd say that's better than biscuits

Ohthedaffodils · 14/05/2025 11:30

My dentist went above and beyond for me a few months ago. I went in with a big box of chocolate biscuits. They were chuffed.

Gundogday · 14/05/2025 11:35

We’ve done this as well. Biscuits are always appreciated.

purplecorkheart · 14/05/2025 11:41

I think a card explaining how much their help meant to your family would be lovely and I am sure the biscuits will go down well too.

Yes they get paid - most are on minimum wage though

So do waiters, hairdressers etc, but people still tip them.

OP, I think its a lovely idea. Working in healthcare (like many other jobs) can be very stressful and we often see people when they are going through a tough time, and they don't always have capacity to say a proper thank you.

But now things have hopefully settled for your family, it would be a lovely gesture to drop in a card and biscuits, it can be a great morale boost, especially on a tough day

BearPear · 14/05/2025 11:53

I worked at a GP surgery (minimum wage, maximum stress!) and we always appreciated a card or a box of biscuits. We had a little book where we recorded any compliments or nice gestures we received. It’s no bother for you to send a card but it really is very much appreciated by the staff.

Maybethisallthereis · 14/05/2025 11:55

People are quick to complain but never say thank you so I say do it! As an NHS worker we appreciate it!!

cheekaa · 14/05/2025 12:00

I do this every year with my GP surgery. Either a large box of chocolates or biscuits. Due to my age and medical history I need to use my surgery quite frequently and most of the staff are extremely helpful. I usually attach a card to the box thanking the whole team for their support and hand it over personally to who ever is at reception.

Chumssss · 14/05/2025 13:56

Thank you everyone, I think I’ll go ahead and buy the biscuits! A card and a positive online review are also great ideas, I’ll do those too. Thank you all

I sent a GP surgery that had been very kind an Amazon voucher. All this ‘they get paid’ is rather depressing.

PinotDragon86 · 14/05/2025 16:43

That's a really nice idea! Too often it's all negativity it's refreshing to see someone wanting to do something nice for others. I'm sure it would really brighten their day. Sadly they deal with a lot of grief throughout the day.

tipsyraven · 14/05/2025 17:41

I sent my GP a card thanking her for going above and beyond for me once. It was pinned up on her noticeboard when I next when in.
