Without an exchange, there is no secondary market. Buyers of shares have no way of exchanging their shareholding for cash, so yes they are vital for a functioning economy.

I'm with Marx. The workers should get the profit created from the surplus value of their labour and own the companies they work for. Worker owned companies have higher levels of engagement and are good for everyone!
