There's a bird family living in my shed

They're shitting on my lawn mower, they've pulled my hammock cushion to pieces for nesting material. They cheep and fly at me when I try to get something out of there.

They're songbirds of some description, I don't know what kind though.

AIBU to abandon the shed (and conveniently all gardening work) and leave them to it? DH thinks we ought to issue a section 21 as the lawn needs mowing and really needs some 4-in-1. He is a moron, birds can't fucking read.

Can you get a photo of them? You could identify them. It won't get them out of your shed but it would be interesting to know.

S0j0urn4r · 13/05/2025 12:59

Wait until the babies have fledged. They will move out. Clear up and block any entry holes.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 13/05/2025 12:59

Tell him that the lawn doesn't need mowing until you lose a child in it. And the birds won't be there for much longer, anyhow.

Are they big birds, small, brown, black or blue/yellow? That'll give some ideas of what they could be.

EleanorReally · 13/05/2025 12:59

have you thought about no mow may

MoistVonL · 13/05/2025 13:01

It’s May, no need to mow your lawn in May. Pollinators and all that.

One month of environmentally sponsored laziness. Embrace it.

Daleksatemyshed · 13/05/2025 14:19

Your DH shouldn't mow the lawn in May anyway and can we please see a photo of the birds?

Hipatch · 13/05/2025 14:22

We have them in our shed too. We just go in and get stuff out. The birds pretty much ignore us now. Just leave them alone?

comeandhaveteawithme · 13/05/2025 14:27

You can't evict or disturb them. It's illegal to disturb a bird's nest or eggs. Tell your DH you legally have no choice but to hire a gardener to come with their own mower.

myplace · 13/05/2025 14:33

Be thrilled! Bird poop will wash off easily enough.

The hammock cushion is already damaged so too late to worry. There’s always a chance with sheds- we have to keep all fabrics in plastic crates as we had mice nesting in- far worse.

MsNevermore · 13/05/2025 14:35

I had birds nesting in the roofs of my garage a few years ago - as a previous poster said, it’s highly likely that as soon as the babies have fledged, mum will move on.
I’d just leave them to it for now - maybe chuck a tarp over your lawn mower until then.

KvotheTheBloodless · 13/05/2025 14:46

I will try to get a photo. If I get my eyes pecked out, I shall blame you lot.

I had two separate nests in the house a while ago - holes in the tiles on the outside and in the brick. I waited until October and they'd moved out and had the holes filled. I loved hearing them. Blue tits and sparrows, I think.

It's gorgeous isn't it!
I stayed in a cabin that had a nest of coal tits in the eves above the front door.
Before we got married my husband lived next door to a man with a nest of robins chicks in the vented bit at the side of his VW camper van.

Natsku · 13/05/2025 16:07

Ah I'd love that, I'd be bird watching every spare moment.

I have squirrels living in my roof, that is less fun, can hear them scurrying about when I'm trying to sleep.

Yes, I loved the thought of them being there. The blue tits were near the boiler so were quite cosy :). The plumber said they were fine where they were, couldn't get into the boiler from the flue, so I'd hear them chirping. Thought I'd fill the holes though when they moved out as I was moving too.

BobbyBiscuits · 13/05/2025 16:09

I wouldn't want to harm them. I guess identify what they are and look at rspb or RSPCA guidance.
I presume you don't own a cat?

Tygertiger · 13/05/2025 16:18

It’s illegal to disturb nesting birds. Please leave them be until they’ve fledged, most of our garden bird species are in decline.

DoNotStandOnRotatingChairs · 13/05/2025 16:25

We had starlings above the door so we had to endure attacks every time we went in or out😂
They are proper protective

DinoLil · 13/05/2025 16:28

It's No Mow May!

That's the excuse I'm using and, apparently, so is the guy who mows my lawn because he's not available until the end of the month!

Greedybilly · 13/05/2025 16:30

Leave them and the lawn. Nature needs all the help it can get right now.x

Padloque · 13/05/2025 16:30

We've got blue tits nesting in our patio heater, and robins nesting in the garage. And a pair of pigeons who keep building nests in the most stupid places - they're not the greatest parents.

Padloque · 13/05/2025 16:33

Also, when DH and I were looking at houses, we viewed a really beautiful old barn which seemed to have a lot of swallows flying around. DH, a nature lover, commented approvingly, but the owner rolled his eyes and said, Ugh, yes, they're nesting in the garage - I wish I could get rid of the little bastards, they're always shitting on my Porsche.

Owner had only been in the countryside a few years but it wasn't what he'd hoped for, apparently...

CombatBarbie · 13/05/2025 16:42

I have a swallow nest, I love watching them teaching the babies to fly over my front lawn. Also have recurring blue tit's in my rhododendrons. Love watching mum and dad coming out to feed!

DoNotStandOnRotatingChairs · 13/05/2025 17:00

Covid was amazing for birds. We had house martins nesting in the front. They are normally not there because of the traffic. Lots of people reported them nesting in unusual places. Yes, the flybyes and training are adorable!
