Is it unprofessional to use the Teams app on my phone for an interview?

I have an interview tomorrow and I’m feeling a bit stressed about the tech situation. Usually, I use my Mac laptop for interviews, but in my last two interviews, my camera kept freezing, and the interviewer could only hear me. I’ve tried everything to fix it, but the issue seems to be with my laptop not letting me download the Teams app, so I’m stuck using the desktop version in my browser, which makes everything slow.

Would it be unprofessional if I used the Teams app on my phone instead? I’ll make sure the phone is stationary, and everything is set up well beforehand. I’m just really worried about the technical issues, and I want to make the best impression!

If you have it in landscape they won't be able to tell.

Certainly wouldn't bother me as an interviewer.

Good luck!

I've been in a lot of Teams interviews as 2nd interviewer and it's never bothered me whether someone is using their phone or a laptop. Just make sure you've got it stable, they're not getting a view up your nose or down your ear and make sure the sound is audible.

Honestly, I think anyone who has done enough interviews over Teams is very well used to either end having technical difficulties!

I’d just ensure it’s on landscape ideally, and that the phone is in a fixed location (meaning you’re not holding it).

I've interviewed many people on teams on their phone, including one in her car, it makes no difference to me as an interviewer. Car lady was offered a job. As an interviewer, I'm looking for someone suitable for the role and who would fit well in the team. It's the content of the interview that's important not the method used.

I should add, she wasn't driving at the time! I'm presuming it was her lunch break and it was the quietest most private place she could find.

I did. Used a tripod and set it up on some books. My computer is too old and wouldn't run teams.

Can they even tell what type of device you're on?

DoYouReally · 13/05/2025 12:31

Set it up on a phone holder horizontally and it will be just fine.

Just don't go for a walk and do the interview on the street. Which is a real life example!

Normally you can tell, yes.

MellowPinkDeer · 13/05/2025 12:58

all it would tell me is you really wanted to be there and you’re good at being flexible and finding solutions. Good luck!

RockGirl · 13/05/2025 14:26

You can use Teams online via your browser on your Macbook. You don't need the app.

Goballistic · 13/05/2025 15:12

Will you be logged in under your work profile or a private one?

Maddy70 · 13/05/2025 15:14

How will they know? Just ensure it's angled so you are face on

scalt · 13/05/2025 15:15

I’ve used my phone for an interview. I put it on a music stand.

Ollybob · 13/05/2025 15:32

All good, sometimes using a phone means that it works better!
I have had issues before on my laptop and had a little panic when I ran into sound issues so joined via my mobile then I realised I had very little battery left so I had to run across the room and complete the interview sat at an odd angle on the sofa as the charging cord was too short 😂
Got the job though 😁
