“Any gender” changing room for women in Primark

Womanwomanwoman1 · 13/05/2025 10:26

I joined a queue of women waiting for (I assumed) the changing room on the right with no sign on. The other sign on the left said “Any Gender” - I asked whether both changing rooms were open because of the queue. I was told that the one without the sign is the Men’s changing room, the women’s is signed “Any gender”.

Won’t be returning there again.

I don't understand. The women were all queuing for the men's changing room?

Overthebow · 13/05/2025 11:07

It’s that illegal?

TheGirlWhoLived · 13/05/2025 11:10

My primark is the opposite… they had women’s and any gender

BobbyBiscuits · 13/05/2025 11:10

That sounds mad. I'd have made a complaint.
Where was this?

CeffylCoch · 13/05/2025 11:18

Are you sure? Ours is women’s and ‘any gender’ so the men go in the ‘any gender’ one I assume. My DS didn’t want to go in there to try things on though

Womanwomanwoman1 · 13/05/2025 11:18

The changing room is at the end of the far side of the store, fairly quiet, it was just one queue (of women) in the middle of the changing rooms entrance, then the changing rooms splitting off into two when you walk in. The right had no signage, the left was “Any gender” and that was where the women were being sent by the staff.

I did speak to the manager, who wasn’t very helpful.

Sounds like someone is muddled at the store - why would women not be allowed in the unlabeled side? Were both sections definitely open?

Edited

Sorry missed this? What did the manager say? That the set up was one section just for men and one for anyone who wanted? What on the earth was the justification for that?

Rabidbunnyrabbit · 13/05/2025 11:31

Isn't this why there was a need to clarify matters in the recent ruling. The fact that it was becoming a case of "mens" and "any gender", essentially erasing women's spaces altogether. The setup you describe in that store just means all are open to men. As far as I know, a man fits within the definition of "ANY gender".

Is the any way of stopping this particular runaway train because it's starting to seem doubtful.

TesChique · 13/05/2025 11:31

To be clear. There were two options?

Men and Unisex?

Womanwomanwoman1 · 13/05/2025 11:33

The other side was for men, I thought in the madness we live in now I’d be believed.. glad to see others think this is bonkers too though!

So one side for men.. other side for Any gender but includes women and that was where the women were being directed to.

I do hope someone who’s been into the store comes along to corroborate what I am saying.

Primark stated years ago that their changing rooms were self-ID despite being labelled mens and womens - perhaps this is them trying to make it clearer that they are really unisex.

Possibly an employee making a mistake though? I’ve heard womens and any gender too

Womanwomanwoman1 · 13/05/2025 11:38

Maybe, the employee and the manager were making the same mistake though

OP posts:
Womanwomanwoman1 · 13/05/2025 11:40

Maybe it’s a manager mistake, the poor employee did say she’d been asked about it previously by other customers.

Serencwtch · 13/05/2025 11:46

It's one for women & one for 'any gender' so women can use either.
If there was a long queue of only women then women would be directed to either.

You've got it completely mixed up OP.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 13/05/2025 11:46

The primark near me also has changing room split into 2, labelled 'women' and 'any gender'.

I noticed it last time I went and assumed it was a result of the media attention when women were harassed and filmed in the completely unisex changing rooms they implemented.

The fact that there was no sign for the 'mens' in your store makes me wonder if it is indeed a management issue, and the reason they didn't have a 'mens' sign is because primark don't produce them in their branding and it should have been a 'women' sign?

KT1113 · 13/05/2025 11:47

Ah well at least it wont be an issue for you again if you aren't going back.

Perhaps the managemnet are just complete knobs and haven't got the brains / common sense to think otherwise.

Womanwomanwoman1 · 13/05/2025 11:49

Like I say, I hope someone who’s been into the store comes along, the women were waiting for the Any Gender changing room as the member of staff had told them to, when I asked to use the other changing room, I was told, no it was the mens even though it was empty. She offered to get a manager to come and explain, which he did, he told me exactly what she did.

Perhaps I’m not explaining myself very well.

I’ve made an official complaint anyway.
