To confront boss about this?

I am in the senior team at work and have a set area of responsibility. There ae 6 of us on the team, one of whom is the overall boss of the organisation. Last week, following a meeting, the rest of them were hanging around talking but I had to leave due to childcare. However, I forgot something so had to go back to the building and they were discussing me/my area of responsibility in a critical way, basically implying what I am doing isn't having an impact. To be clear, I am not 100% sure this was what they meant but I know what I heard and am around 90% it was about me due to the context/detail.

I'm upset about this and especially because nothing has been said since. If I'm not doing well I'd rather have a professional conversation about it but in fact my figures are in line with everyone else's and I've had some positive feedback from other stakeholders so I'd just like the chance to speak up for myself, as well as being willing to take on board constructive comments. I feel like the boss is out of order for discussing me/my work with others as well.

Would you say anything? It was mid-week so don't know if it's too late now but I can't shake it.

Did you actually overhear your name or did you just catch a snippet of the conversation and assume it was about you? If you truly believe that they were talking about you, I would be honest with your boss and speak to them alone. Just say you overheard the conversation and what you are concerned about. Ask if there are worries about your work performance and how you can address them if there are.

Definitely approach your boss about this and share your concerns in a professional manner. They can either assure you that you misheard but I’m sure would be thankful you cared enough to raise it or you can have an honest discussion about areas of perceived improvement in your role. Until you have this chat please try not to catastrophise the situation x
