Plastic sheet on adults' bed in holiday chalet?

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 12/05/2025 15:10

Just back from a few days in a holiday chalet (UK). It's on a site where the chalets are privately owned and let out through a management company. We've been going for years (different chalets) and this is the first time I can remember there being plastic sheets on the beds (under the sheet but on top of a memory foam topper). I woke up several times the first night feeling hot and sweaty. The next day I took the sheet off, to see Do Not Remove written in felt pen on the plastic! So I slept on a beach towel after that - better, but it rucked up. I want opinions on whether you think this is reasonable. I want to go back to that chalet but not to sleep on plastic. I can't imagine how unpleasant it would be sleeping on that in the summer. TIA

Could you not just have removed it for the night and then put it back it on the following morning or before you left?

Grantanow · 12/05/2025 15:15

We had one in a week's rental of a gite in France. We removed it for the week and replaced it when we left. I don't see why one has to be uncomfortable.

I think a mattress is a massive cost and are very easy to stain . I wouldn’t want to sleep on plastic either so have sheepskin toppers that wick away moisture and can be washed.

OchonAgusOchonOh · 12/05/2025 15:18

That's ridiculous. You can get waterproof mattress protectors that don't feel any different to a normal protector. When we bought a new mattress recently, that's what they recommended as it extends the life of the mattress.

Absolutely no way would I sleep on a plastic sheet. I would have taken it off and replaced when we were leaving. I would also include it as a negative point in the review, pointing out that alternatives exist.

I had this experience in an Airbnb once. It was sweaty, uncomfortable, and made horrible squeaky rustling sounds whenever I turned over.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 12/05/2025 15:29

I wonder if it's to do with bedbugs?

roseymoira · 12/05/2025 15:55

It would be impossible to sleep on. They should include it on the listing so people can make an informed choice.

MrsSkylerWhite · 12/05/2025 15:57

Awful. Couldn’t have slept.

angelinawasrobbed · 12/05/2025 15:59

We had this once. And the mattress was hard as nails. Would never go back!

Ddakji · 12/05/2025 16:00

Yeuch. I would have removed it.

DuckieDodgyHedgyPiggy · 12/05/2025 16:36

They have asked for feedback, and I've said I think they are BU to expect adults to sleep on a plastic sheet. They haven't come back to me yet.

Doubtless they've had an 'accident' in the past.

More to do with pee and other bodily fluids. You can’t prevent bed bugs with a waterproof sheet!

MumChp · 12/05/2025 17:16

I simply remove them. They are awful to sleep on.

amooseymoomum · 12/05/2025 17:32

Hospital beds I cannot sleep on because they make you sweat like mad as they have plastic style coverings
when I had my operation it was awful lying there sweating in the bed but was too ill to keep moving
I guess they have had to take drastic measures because of bed wetting or spills

Fraaances · 12/05/2025 17:32

Probably bed bug prevention

librathroughandthrough · 12/05/2025 17:35

I would be worried what was lurking underneath. Are they tying to hide a stained mattress

There was a (clean) mattress topper too (memory foam so also sweaty) but yes, a a stain in the middle of the mattress. So presumably they weren't going to risk it again. But my feeling is that surely this is very unusual and that it is BU to expect adults to sleep on a plastic sheet.

No way would that prevent bed bugs!

We have a gîte - and yes I use a waterproof mattress protector. It is the fitted sort (like a fitted sheet). On top of that is a tight fitting stretchy sheet, and on top of that a cotton quilted non waterproof mattress protector.
I have the same arrangement on our bed- it doesn’t rustle or move or make me hot and uncomfortable.
I change the layers for each set of guests (don’t let for less than a week)

Mattress are expensive and stain really easily - there are no stains on our beds!
Think about it- what do people get up to in bed? Without adequate protection all those body fluids would be soaking into the mattress 🤮. And yes, adults also wet the bed on occasion! And don’t ask me about the honeymooners —I wore rubber gloves to change that bed—

The answer is good quality waterproof protectors which don’t move or rustle, with a comfortable good quality cover on top.

You're right. That seems reasonable. If they did that, I wouldn't mjnd. In fact I would rather that, because as you say, otherwise you're sleeping on other people's bodily fluids. Although hotels don't have plastic sheets, do they. I wonder how they manage?

I’m afraid hotels do have them. I had a horrible night with one last night. I’ve just removed it.
