Anyone use home dye regularly?

I normally get my hair coloured at a salon but I’m getting pissed off with it. Having to sit there for 4 hours, paying £80 for the privilege and I’m never that happy with the result.

Im tempted to just start using hone dye. I don’t have an active social life, I work from home - I’m a typical week i basically do the shopping, walk the dog and work in my home. What’s the point in paying out loads when very few people see it anyway?

or will I regret it?

Plus the greys start coming through within 3 weeks so even though I’m paying £80 - I still end up with grey roots soon afterwards! At least if I hone dyes I’m not paying out so much and I can top it up whenever I need to

Depends how fancy you like your hair to be, but I'm happy with an all over box dye and it saves loads of money!

My phone is poorly so ignore the typos

Yup. Garnier Olia, whenever I get greys so probably every 3 weeks or even less. saves me tons and looks exactly the same as salon.

Cookiecrumblepie · 12/05/2025 09:29

Also WAY more convenient!

Calafragic · 12/05/2025 09:30

I do and think it looks fine. I’m in my early 30s and have had a lot of greys for ten years. Getting it done at the hairdresser is nicer but either way after a few weeks the greys come through and I literally cannot afford that kind of maintenance. I’d rather box dye than being grey personally.

TheGoddessFrigg · 12/05/2025 09:30

I always use home dye. I cannot bear sitting for four hours in a hairdressers, for a colour which doesn't last anyway!

CrispyEye · 12/05/2025 09:31

Any recommendations for box dyes? I’m on way to shop now

I've been using box dye for about 30 years, give or take. I've never had it dyed in a salon, could never justify paying that much money on myself.

PansyPottering · 12/05/2025 09:31

I’ve just started using box dye for the same reason. Although mine costs £45 it’s the time it takes that I resent.

I got a bowl and a brush. I section my hair into a lot of small parts using small hairbands and then my dd does the roots. It’s only shoulder length. I am worried that I might be doing some damage to my hair because I don’t know anything about hair.

EmeraldLily · 12/05/2025 09:31

I do and I’m a light auburn colour. I have long hair so need to use 2 boxes when dying it but I always get compliments on how nice the colour is including my hairdresser.

untilido · 12/05/2025 09:32

I did mine for years at home. Keeping on top of grey became so annoying though I ended up growing the colour out completely and now just have grey hair

Howinthehelldidthishappen · 12/05/2025 09:33

should also say that I've been about 90% grey since my mid twenties....
I never found nice n easy to be very good, it never covered the grey very well at all.
I'm currently using schwarzkopf live, but then I'm bright purple at the moment, so not sure you want that recommendation lol

elizabethbennet72 · 12/05/2025 09:34

Yes I use esalon, they will match the colour to your hair if you send a picture. It's £27 every 3 months, but still much cheaper than going to the salon, i stopped going for exactly the same reasons as you.

Takeingmytime · 12/05/2025 09:50

I stoped dying my hair 3 year ago.
I had a reaction to the dye id used the same one for years.
So i thought fuck it shaved my head bald.
I mean bald bald.
Now i have long healthy natural cork screw curls.
I do have some grays but i really like it its soft bouncy easy to manage.
When i use to dye it it was flat and like wire also the dye took my natural curls away.
Never use dye again.

RedJamDoughnut · 12/05/2025 10:03

I box dye my grey stripe and a few sections, can't even be bothered to do the whole head.
The colour match is good and it livens up my hair.
Dosent take long & 1 box lasts about 4 of these touch ups.

Velvetgoldmine · 12/05/2025 10:07

Nice n easy by Clairol - no ammonia, no damage, do it as often as you like. Some colours deal with gray better than others tho.

slamdunk66 · 12/05/2025 10:45

i use a box dye though get it dyed at a salon once every 9 months to cover greys ive missed at the back. If you go into Sally’s hair and beauty they will do a colour match and the tubes last around 2-3 applications (roots only).

Katemax82 · 12/05/2025 11:44

Casting by loreal is nice, or if you want try salon they tailor your colour to you and add free stuff

Picklechicken · 12/05/2025 12:03

I can’t stand getting my hair done at a salon. I just hate it. I recently spent £130 on having my grey blended in with highlights etc but a couple of weeks later the roots looked horrendous and I couldn’t imagine leaving it another few weeks - and then paying another load of money to have it redone (and sitting for 4 hours faffing about). So nope. I’ve gone back to Nutrisse or Excellence. Both are very good - I like the fact they go into a cream so they don’t drip anywhere. I think it looks absolutely fine.

Starlightstargazer · 12/05/2025 16:13

I use L’Oréal excellence crème and it works well for me!

Izzabellasasperella · 12/05/2025 16:37

I use Garnier Nutrisse in a red shade. They are 2 for £12 in Tesco had the moment.
Dont forget to Vaseline around your hairline and ears. Box dyes are messy and they stain everything 😀 Wet wipes or makeup wipes are really good to wipe away any from your skin.

MsNevermore · 12/05/2025 16:42

Yep - I’ve been doing my own hair at home for probably a decade.
If you dye your hair darker than your natural colour, and do the box dye as an all over colour you can’t really mess it up.
If it’s lighter than your natural colour then there’s lots of room for error!
