I'm a 27 year old who have very very fine thin hair. It's a genetic thing and the whole female side of the family suffer from extremely fine hair that thins dramatically on top.
Ever since I had DS 5 years ago my hair has been very thin on top. I have enough to style it and it not be too noticeable but there is a distinctive patch that is so thin you can just see scalp.
I haven't coloured my hair in well over a year and don't intend to any time soon. I tend to wear my hair down.
I spoke to my hairdresser who said that the problem is I have lots of hair (goes to the small of my back) it's just very fine and thin. She suggested I need to try reducing the weight of my hair pulling on the scalp to promote hair growth.

I refuse to cut my hair short. I have an extremely round face and my hair is precious to how I feel comfortable. However, my hairdresser said I could have a go at some hairstyles to do every day to keep the weight off my scalp. Problem is she only said French braids which I can't do!!
Anyone on here who is hair savvy know of any simpler hairstyles I can do. Or any specialist shampoos/formulas would be amazing!!

Help a thin haired girl out!!

This stuff. OMG, so grateful to the op for starting the thread.

As an aside, ferritin needs to be above 70 for healthy hair growth, low B12, low Vit D and low folate can all cause hair thinning. Maybe take a good multivitamin to make sure your levels are optimal too?

I know I'm going to sound like an advert, but... At age 53 I have actually found a product that makes my crap, super-fine, thin, poker-straight hair m...

Charles Worthington thinker and fuller shampoo and conditioner. I know how you feel about long hair being part of your identity, but mine still feels long at collar bone length but definitely sits less flat. When it's waved it also looks thicker, and I always use elnett volumising mousse or Living Proof perfect hair day, or Percy and Reid volumising oil- basically some product every day!

That looks good. Only issue is I don't blow dry as I don't want the heat on it. Not sure if that makes a difference seems that there is mixed opinions

@foxredlab2 - the only product that works for me is Color Wow…. i’ve tried everything and that stuff is v good!
Agree with PP that Ferratin levels need to be checked as well

I'm calling BS on your hairdresser's advice. Braids put even more tension on your hair and would cause it to break more easily. And your issue is thickness not length right? So why would the current length of hair have any bearing on new hair growth? Are there any hairdressers on MM that can clarify?

Hulabalu · 12/05/2025 22:01

Caffeine shampoo? Comditiom your hair well & use a serum or similar to help prevent breakage. Rough dry hair on low heat. Supplements might help

Rennoc30 · 12/05/2025 22:11

Nioxin is amazing for thinning hair! You use it as a system. It has proven results and I would recommend every time

I’d get a lot cut off the weight isn’t helping at all.

Get a cut and some layers added to make it look thicker

Have you thought about using a hair topper? It’s not like a full wig, it’s a small hair piece that attaches securely with clips and blends into your own hair and they make them breathable.

I follow a make up lady on YouTube and she made a video about a hair topper and I found it fascinating and it looked completely natural.
