Oatly organic barista

Just looking for experiences really. I bought 2 boxes of the long-life (not chilled) Oatly organic barista oat milk on friday and opened one yesterday (Saturday). It was fine. Using it for my coffee this morning and it curdled. I opened the other one and that’s curdled as well. Been using oat milk in coffee for years so I don’t think it’s my technique. Has anyone else had a similar experience recently?

Very sad and cross as the only other oat milk we have is Plenish, and that’s all sorts of wrong and disappointing.

That is odd… could it be the heat?

I don’t know- it hasn’t been that hot where they’re stored.

I feel like the organic ones split more often because they use different emulsifier or something. I've definitely had this happen with the organic one before. The non organic oatly is fab.

doodleschnoodle · 11/05/2025 10:42

Are you sure it’s curdled? I imagine it’s just separated. The organic Oatly one doesn’t use emulsifiers like a lot of oat milks (gums and things), so it’s normal for it to separate. Did you try shaking or mixing it?

Bodonka · 11/05/2025 10:44

Are you sure it’s a long life one? I’ve found a few times the chilled ones in the long life section due to customers swapping them in the past and no staff realising 🤢

AlertCat · 11/05/2025 11:36

Definitely long life and definitely curdled- it happened after I poured it out. I always shake the box before I heat the milk.

It’ll just be because it’s the organic one, it doesn’t have emulsifiers in and separates when it hits the hot drink. There’s various things you can do but if you aren’t bothered about emulsifiers being used generally in a UPF sense I’d just buy the non-organic version next time.

If you do want to try using the ones you have, you can gently warm the milk first and add the milk very slowly while stirring the whole time.

The Oatly organic always separates in hot drinks - we have switched to Rude Health organic which is pretty good. Plenish is awful, tastes like dust!

I’ll try this, thanks- it’s not cheap to chuck out two whole boxes.

I worked in a supermarket and saw this frequently happen as customer picks a fresh Alpro, Oatly. Then later on, goes past the long life milks and noticed that the long life is on offer. Leaves the fresh one on the shelf.

I can tell the difference between the long life and fresh milk alternatives. The LL have a flatter top. www.ocado.com/products/oatly-oat-drink-barista-edition-long-life-274675011 Fresh has a 'fin' on the top www.ocado.com/products/oatly-oat-drink-barista-chilled-583595011?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=22448400676&utm_content=non-brand&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=22438558782&gbraid=0AAAAADi6iHmd_30Nvq6PoU7Mdjw-7tY05&gclid=Cj0KCQjwlYHBBhD9ARIsALRu09qrS_OU3ll9rkjwtBbcEHQCyvJjmqYprDhssYJTNo4IJwNMt3XoYusaAkCCEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.dswhere the UB date is printed. fresh LL has date printed on a panel on the flat bit.

I think Alpro, Oatly and other milk alternative brands need to make the difference between fresh and LL stand out more.

You cannot use the dates to determine what's fresh or LL as I think Plenish has 10 months shelf life before opening. Others have less than 10 weeks.

I've had the same thing happen to me with the same milk this morning, also brought it because it was on offer, I'm really annoyed. Won't be getting it again

Yes! Avoiding it now. I did manage to use it up by heating it less, but frankly I prefer my coffee hot!

oatly can need a good shake before use - sometimes it settles in lumps that look like curds but are not

GloriousBlue · 23/05/2025 12:09

Ours always lasts about 7 days (often longer).

Owlplant · 23/05/2025 12:15

It tastes fine, not off. It'll be fine for cereal. Wish I didn't have another full one unopened!

Justme2023123 · 23/05/2025 13:01

I think it's something to do with long life milk. My daughter has the alpro growing up milk and I'll sometimes use it in my coffee but it will always split in Beanies coffee, not in bog standard supermarket instant coffee though 🤷🏼‍♀️
