David Cameron & Reform

Is it unreasonable to think that if David Cameron hadn't been such a fool as to hold the Brexit referendum, Reform (aka UKIP) would still be a bunch of gibbering loonies treated with the total contempt they deserve?

Thanks for nothing (again) Dave.

Not unreasonable at all. I will never forgive him for what he did.

He gave people a democratic vote on something that had moved away from the initial formation

It was actually James goldsmith who came before ukip with his referendum party. Google the origins it's interesting

They still are a gibberish bunch of loonies. I’m astounded that people are voting for them.

The growth of Reform type thinking is not solely a UK thing. Look at France, Italy, Germany - they have all seen a huge rise in anti-immigration politics. Reform have actually been less successful here - France and Germany almost got an extreme right wing party in their last elections and in Italy they won. So far, Reform/UKIP etc have come nowhere near in a general election. I can blame Brexit for many, many things but your clutching at straws here.

They are still a bunch of gibbering loonies at their core. I don't think that it's the brexit vote or Cameron that is getting them votes, it's the total incompetence and functional uselessness of both of the two major political parties. Conservatives have presented an image of reliability and financial probity but have totally fucked up so comprehensively over the past 14 years that right wing people don’t want to vote for them, and so some more canny tories have jumped ship to Reform knowing they will get their protest votes. That wouldn't matter if Labour were doing a decent job having taken over the reins of power, but the best they are offering is managing our decline into the shit with very slightly more compassion than was on offer before, but no actual hope of saving or improving state education, health or care services, and removing benefits just as much as the tories would while pretending to be doing so in an ethical way - so left wing voters will stay home rather than vote for them.

The thing that could halt the rising star of Reform is if the local councils they have taken over recently, exhibit such spectacular disastrous failings over the next few years that the Reform brand gets tarnished just as much.

Same. I blame him entirely.

Let’s hope that happens!! I dread to think what would happen if reform took over councils in Wales 🤮
