To prevent neighbours cat from entering garden?

So the same neighbour whose kids literally are a nuisance has now got an issue with me blocking up the hedgehog holes in the fence to prevent her numerous cars from entering my garden and pooing everywhere.

She has like 6 cats and they all poo in my garden and one even scared my little on when he shot through the kitchen once.

As soon as DH was boarding it up she was out in the garden digging a massive hole in the soil on the boundary.

I love animals, I have had 6 cats in the past but it dosent make me anti animals surely?

She was saying I’m killing of the wildlife yet she has multiple bird feeders next to her cat flap? Surely that isn’t good for the wildlife either?

AIBU to do this?

Get some dried lion poo as a cat repellant and put it your side of the hedgehog hole. Supposed to work but personally I’ve not tried it. There are garden sprays you can use too… or a motion activated sprinkler ?

YANBU. I am absolutely sick of other people’s cats pooing in our gardens. I have recently:

  • Attached green mesh netting under the gap in my gate. That has stopped loads.
  • Pulled my children’s playhouse and wheelie bins away from fences.
  • 1 neighbour is very considerate, and planted things which have trailed up over our shared fence before she got her cat, which completely stops any walking on it or entering our garden. Very grateful to her.
  • DH attached plastic spike strips along the back fence (nobody’s house behind ours).
  • I’ve blocked up a ‘hedgehog hole’ with our blue plastic horse.
  • Out the front I’ve needed to cut a load of our holly and lay it all over our flower beds. Looks OK. Also put cocktail sticks all over one- nothing since.
  • Previously tried things which emit noise and scented granules. Worked for a while then didn’t.

Basically, it’s your garden, they are not your pets, end of. A dog owner would be crucified if they allowed their dog to walk in and poo in someone’s garden.

You have my absolute empathy! Hope it improves for you soon and you can have one less job to do in your own garden!

My cats go over fences, though unfortunately they seem to prefer my garden beds to poo in. So not sure if blocking up holes will really help that much. Some dirt if repellant is needed

Devilmentpleassure · 10/05/2025 19:46

I like the holly leaves idea. I’m going to try that.

BMW6 · 10/05/2025 19:48

Tell her to fuck off and you have EVERY right to stop her cats from entering YOUR garden.

You also have every right to give her any cat poo back into her own garden. Lob it over.

Unfortunately? I take it you’d prefer they use the neighbour’s garden??

@OutandAboutMum1821 thank you so much!

Some very good suggestions there, I will buy some green meshing for the gap under my gate. I was thinking what I could put there, thank you so much.

no need to put lion poo. I believe you can go
to B&Q or DIY home stores to buy sensor type of equipment that automatically turn on water sprinklers when an intruder steps into your yard/garden. This highly likely deters the cats from coming through yours again. If not, manually turn on your hose next time you see them entering your yard. After a few times they will likely stop.

You’re welcome, I bought a roll of it from B & Q, cut it very easily to fit exactly with scissors and just attached it with standard drawing pins. It’s stayed attached well, DH has offered to attach it using more permanent screws if need be.

You can also buy prickly mats on Amazon to lay slightly under soil/bark in beds, but I haven’t tried those yet as the holly is working well, looks decorative and was free 😂

The times you hear cat owners crowing about how clean cats are. No, they are not, They do poo. They do not always bury it.

ZekeZeke · 10/05/2025 19:58

A clewr green plastic bottle with water (like 7up).
Swear to God it works! Sounds nuts but believe me, it works

ClaredeBear · 10/05/2025 20:13

Domestic cats pose a significant threat to wildlife, with studies estimating they kill between 160-275 million animals annually in the UK alone. This includes an estimated 40-70 million birds. Free-ranging cats in the US are estimated to kill 1.4-3.7 billion birds and 6.9-20.7 billion mammals yearly.

The impact of free-ranging domestic cats on wildlife of the United StatesScott R Loss et al. Nat Commun. 2013.

TidalShore · 10/05/2025 20:19

If it's only the hedgehog holes they are coming through (surprised they're not coming over the fence too) and you still want to be helpful to wildlife, something like this will let hedgehogs pass, but not cats. The turns are too tight for cats pass through, but no bother for hedgehogs

Owmyelbow · 10/05/2025 20:42

Yes please find a way to let hedgehogs through. The cats will just come another way, but hedgehogs need all the help you can get. I had massive issues with cats coming from neighbours and shitting everywhere. Seem to have cracked it with a mix of essential oils that Ive put where they crap the most. Citronella oil, lemon and lavender mixed together. Bought some big bottles of Amazon, it seems to be working so far

cinderelllaa · 11/05/2025 18:18

Thank you for the suggestions, hopefully it works.

I have ordered some of the suggestions, fingers crossed.
Im not an anti animal person at all, I like animals but it’s abit too much having my neighbours 4/5 cats roaming around and making a mess.

Please don't use mesh or netting if you have hedgehogs around, they get caught and can't get free and can get badly injured.

A large flat tray of water (we use a large outdoor plant pot saucer) next to the hedgehog holes works just as well, cats won't crawl throughout it but hedgehogs will.

EffinMagicFairy · 11/05/2025 18:28

Get a Terrier, that’s does the job of keeping cats out.

Fuckfacetime · 11/05/2025 18:30

Cayenne pepper sprinkled on your flower beds will help. Get a massive bag from eBay

If you do get hedgehogs visiting, please don't use mesh to block the gaps. They can get tangled in it and die
