New fencing

For context, the fencing in question is our responsibility. Today, our neighbour has asked if he can attach some climbers to his side of the fence. We stated that we’re in the process of getting quotes to have it all replaced as it’s old and damaged and we didn’t see the point in him planting out on his side before the new panels go in - we genuinely didn’t want to risk damaging any plants on his side.

He has now claimed that he wants much higher panels than already in situ and we have said no, that’s not happening as it will block a lot of natural light on our side. It will also look ridiculous because the existing posts won’t be tall enough to support higher panels and we are definitely NOT having posts replaced that are in good condition.

Am I being unreasonable in refusing to pay out a shed load of money for taller concrete posts and higher fence panels? There has been no offer from the neighbour to contribute to the project apart from him paying for his plants and shrubs and to be honest I don’t want his money as that could potentially lead to him claiming it’s half his fence and he can do what he likes.

If the fence is on your side wholly then you have what you want , if he wants a higher fence he can pay to install one on his land alongside yours .

If there’s nothing wrong with the existing posts, then it makes sense to just replace the fencing. We have a fence between ourselves and neighbours, they planted shrubs years ago that has now reached about 8ft.

The weight if my neighbours climbers pulled my fence down prematurely. Only that side came down. The other side next to their seating area, where no climbers were, was still fine. Inclined to suggest if he grows climbers up the fence and it starts crumbling under the weight then it’s his turn to replace it.

As said before if he wants something, he can fund and put it in place. Otherwise he has no say.

HelplessSoul · 10/05/2025 17:05

Tell your neighbour to buy his own fence and plant his climbers on that - or on his own ass if that is an option.

Cunts like this always take the piss. When you get your new fence in, be forthright and state he cannot stick any of his tat to it.

We wanted climbers so put up strong trellis with decent post support, 12 inches in from next doors fence.

Your neighbour should do similar

After thinking about this wretched fencing most of the night this is exactly what I intend suggesting to him. We haven’t had quotes yet but will ensure that he is around when the fencing guys come so we can have an open discussion and hopefully the fencing guys will agree with my proposal which will be along the lines of your advice - hope that makes sense.
He is in the process of creating a border with sleepers which would be perfect to fasten his ‘bits’ to.
