Throwing away the weight loss medication

Hi,

I now would have last taken Wegovy 3 weeks ago.

My parents yesterday said shall they put the pen that is in my fridge in the sharps box (bin) I know it sounds daft but I’d rather want to do this.

Then whilst we were discussing this a message about weight management pops up from my doctors surgery who verbally know I’m here in hospital - clicked through to the link it looks like some sort of nhs 12 week course possibly connected to an app. My brother confirms he has been invited to the same as we both live under the same nhs trust.

I couldn’t live with myself if I got home, re-started WLI and then ended up back in same position. Doctors hazy on just how long I’ll be taking the blood thinning injections. Thursday they said as soon as you are up we’ll stop, consultant yesterday said it’s this is going to be a few more weeks.

Looking through my phone last night with my parents I’d taken many pictures over the last 5 years of how swollen my leg leg & foot used to be to get - I hope to get this cellulitis infection cleared up and then ask for tests on lipedema or edema.

Diabetic nurses at surgery still not learning anything - along with not checking my feet on past 2 reviews they didn’t do my brothers recently either.

Eh?

TheOriginalEmu · 10/05/2025 05:24

I’m sorry but I really don’t know what you mean.

You are in hospital so haven't taken your Wegovy but you have a pen in the fridge.

Your parents offered to throw it away, but you want to keep it because you are scared of going back to how you were.

You want to save it for when you are out of your current health crisis and possibly do this course offered by the NHS???

Did I get any of that? Lol

If I interpreted correctly, then you should absolutely keep up your weightloss goals and be firm with your parents. Wegovy is expensive. If it is still in date and safe to use, then it would be silly to throw it away.

Edit: If you are concerned about your foot or leg, advocate for yourself. Show them and say "I am worried about this".
Diabetic reviews and nurses are usually typically quite aware of feet issues, so if you are proactively mentioning it, they will check it out.

Maybe write down your concerns and then put it through ChatGpt to help with a list. Then you can keep track and also it will help you communicate with the medical professionals clearly.

I read your message twice and Im afraid I don’t really understand.

thedeadneverdie · 10/05/2025 06:41

How old are you?

How much do you weigh?

What is your BMI?

Discard the open pen. Get a new one. I’m presuming you get it free from the NHS.

Thanks, I’ve tried asking the parents to leave it alone, after all I have paid £140 for it and for all we know someone in this medical chain could want to test it.

I’ve been proactive enough about my feet/leg problem I have been repeatedly asking since covid started for help with my feet. Even this hospital’s sister hospital couldn’t help just said in 2023 it wasn’t a heart problem.

I have nothing to fear since June 2020 I’ve taken pictures of feet on my phone so there date lined.

Why would anyone want to test a WLI pen?

What is the link between your WLI and your hospitalisation?

Why are your parents poking around in your fridge?

LoafofSellotape · 10/05/2025 09:03

What?

Ceska · 10/05/2025 09:03

Sorry, I've read this a few times and can't work it out

Hoydenish · 10/05/2025 09:14

Ok I have done an AS on the OP. We are I think supposed to be au fait with her health.

OP why are your parents nosing in your fridge whilst you are in hospital. Tell them to pack it in.

MargotB · 10/05/2025 09:16

As clear as mud.

Gyozas · 10/05/2025 10:06

I think we may be able to surmise that the OP is vulnerable, and some consideration of that in posts would be good.

CatsorDogsrule · 10/05/2025 10:24

Wegovy is only approved for use for 6 weeks once opened/ first used. It may already be over 6 weeks by the time you are discharged from the hospital, but I think you are hoping to use it after the 12 week course you have been offered. So yes, this open pen should be disposed of once it has been open for 6 weeks.

For your other medical issues, your doctors or diabetic nurse will be best placed to advise, as they have access to your medical history.

Hope you are up and about soon and can continue to improve your health.
