The shops that keep selling my 16 year old child alcohol? Is it worth reporting?

OP posts:
Needmorelego · 09/05/2025 18:09

Yes.
Report to your local council and trading standards.
Not the police.

JohnofWessex · 09/05/2025 18:09

You will only know if you do.

Try Trading Standards as well

Intheshower · 09/05/2025 18:09

where there’s a will there’s a way

so you need to address the issue with your child because they’ll get around this op

Intheshower · 09/05/2025 18:10

You could let the shop know that this person is 16

send a photo via email so you have an email trail if they carry on

ItGhoul · 09/05/2025 18:10

You would probably be better off going to the licensing authority first, which will usually be part of your local council.

Moveoverdarlin · 09/05/2025 18:12

Yes I would.

PenelopeK · 09/05/2025 18:13

Yes, if it’s reported to police they alert trading standards.

ByeByeByeee · 09/05/2025 18:13

I think giving them a picture of your child saying he/she is underage is quite a good idea.

I hope this isn't the case and I'm sure not but the shop near us never sells alcohol to teens, they just nick it! Is there any way someone is stealing it and giving it to him/her?

If not, then report and also do the photo thing I think

sweeneytoddsrazor · 09/05/2025 18:15

Could someone be buying it for them. Where is your child getting the money from?

No, they're buying it and they buy for others who drink dangerously. I don't think they care and if they know who my child is there may be fear of reprisal if authorities got involved.

You're right, police aren't the ones to contact

100% report them

Not selling, just a favour for friends in his group.

OP posts:
Tulipsontoast · 09/05/2025 18:34

How did you find this out? From your child?
Are you worried that your child is being bullied into buying it or are they choosing to do it?

UpJacksArseAndRoundTheCorner · 09/05/2025 18:35

Your child probably has dodgy ID.

Although clearly the retailer isn't part of Challenge 25.

Contact Trading Standards.

as a favour?

but your child buying
and then accepting money from others in exchange? Even if no profit that is selling op

Endofyear · 09/05/2025 18:43

I would go into the shop and tell them that you're going to report them to trading standards. Then do it.

I wouldn't give the shopkeeper any warning.

TS will send a child to buy alcohol and if he goes to serve them, he'll be banged to rights.

It's a choice, they don't drink to excess but some of their friends do, I don't think they're being bullied but it does give them status as the one gets sold. My child told me, and I believe them

Again, I wouldn't want to make our identity known if authorities are going to be involved

Then yes, they're not gifting the alcohol but they're not profiting

OP posts:
Jijithecat · 09/05/2025 18:49

I wouldn't be warning the shop in advance. As others have said report it to Trading standards.

If you feel uncomfortable about this, you could report it anonymously to Crimestoppers who will pass the information along to the relevant authorities.

Dotjones · 09/05/2025 18:49

Give the shop a photo of your child to put up and tell them that if they sell to your child again, you will call the police. Your child risks a fine of £1000 per offence if they are caught and prosecuted (which is unlikely to be honest, they mainly go after the retailer). Your child is committing a crime and you need to do whatever you can to stop them.

Intheshower · 09/05/2025 18:58

YellowOrangePink · 09/05/2025 18:48

Your child is not only buying for personal consumption
but also selling

OP, your child sounds in dire straits
