AIBU to think a digital family diary should exist??

We are UK based. I've googled (most solutions are from US).

I know this is a first world problem. But due to overwhelm, I've not noted an important appointment in the paper calendar which means a hospital appointment was missed when I'm on a work trip.

We have shelves to take down and I would like to put in it's place an A1 type size digital calendar that can sync to multiple calendars on phones so both DH and I can add; a to do list and meal planning would be awesome too as functionality. I don't think I'm asking the world!

AIBU expecting this to exist? (YABU) Or am I on to something and should create a new business?? (YANBU)

Sorry it's late, my autistic child won't settle and I'm so overwhelmed trying to balance my list of things to do at home outwith my FT job and DH and I are worried about missing appointments again 😢

CloudCal is very good and lots of colour coding options. I use it for everything work and personal. You can sync each event to be accessible to specific people or only you. Sync it to your Google calender as well if it is important to you (it is to me) to be able to search for past events going back years as it auto clears events that are more than about 18 months ago.

theDudesmummy · 09/05/2025 08:31

PS it's doesn't solve the problem of DH never knowing what events are due though, as he refuses to look at a calender (of course he relies on me to know what is going on and inform him of upcoming appointments)!

You could get a cheap tablet and fix it to the wall and install only your preferred calendar app if you want a visual calendar fixed up in the house.

zaxxon · 09/05/2025 08:50

It would be faster, easier, cheaper and more environmentally friendly to just buy a paper calendar, hang it on the wall and write on it

theDudesmummy · 09/05/2025 09:05

Writing on a paper calender wouldn't work for everyone. I am often away and so my appointments wouldn't always get onto a paper calender at home, also I need my calender on me all the time. I suspect it's like that for many people.

@Calmdownpeople Do you mean Skylight? And how responsive do you find it? Do you have the 15 inch or XL version? Looking online the display looks better than the Alexa Show I have. [I find 15 inch too small for a month display]

@MissIonX One thing to bear in mind if you want something wall mounted is that it will need to be plugged in (I haven't seen a rechargeable one, that would be great). We ended up with ours on the side because we don't have suitable wall space in our kitchen near a plug. That means it takes up counterspace, which isn't what I really want.

Edited

Yes sorry Skylight. It’s a good size for the week so we don’t have issues. Also available on phone. Features I like the best are taking pics of events or dates and then converting into an event. Genius.

Tarkan · 09/05/2025 11:03

DH and I came up with this idea in a beer garden a year ago when we were away on holiday and had to ask the kids to check something on the wall calendar for us. 🤣

When we looked into it we did find a few options out there but like you we wanted a wall display, but also a way to access it through our phones. Most options weren’t cheap though so we still just have the paper calendar for family stuff then everyone has their own phones for things when out and about.

IamnotSethRogan · 09/05/2025 11:23

I mean DH and I just have a normal synced calendar. We both have samsungs and it was easy enough to do. I don't personally see the benefit of the wall mounted because I can set various alarms to remind me of apps (1 day before, 1 hour before and 10 mins before) so I never forget them without having to physically go into my calendar to check.

What do you mean taking a picture and converting to an event? The idea in my head seems to good to be true!

It is awesome. You either take a pic of a message, something hand written or any pic with writing and Honestly it converts it into an event. It is like magic. I had a handwritten page with family birthdays and it converted them all with the correct dates onto the calendar. You can also send emails to it and it does the same. By far best thing we even bought. Kids have a chores list, there is a list by person - so I can be at work and think of something and open the app and send it to Skylight. I can then see it online and on the monitor. Genius.

neverbeenskiing · 09/05/2025 13:20

We have a shared Google calendar and have a tablet wall mounted in the kitchen that permanently displays the calendar so we can all update it on our phones and see it visually on the wall.

HiRen · 09/05/2025 13:23

Skylight is what you’re looking for.

ChickalettasGiblets · 09/05/2025 13:44

We use google calendar and it’s synced to both our phones, if you enable notifications then you can get a reminder before the event.

If you wanted it wall mounted, you could get a refurbished tablet like a google nest or Amazon echo as they don’t cost the earth

Bowling4soup · 09/05/2025 14:20

What about a Google home speaker the ones with the screens? Or Alexa version

Hont1986 · 09/05/2025 14:30

The Pixel Tablet with dock would be able to do this, and you'd have the benefit of it looking (relatively) smart rather than wall-mounting a TV in your kitchen. It isn't as big as an A1 poster though.

Dbank · 09/05/2025 17:05

If you're all using iPhones, I would create a "Family" calendar in the iOS calendar application and share it across all users. and have an (old) iPad wall mounted and locked to just run the calendar application.

Londonexhile · 29/08/2025 14:24

I appreciate this is an old thread, but have any skylight users wall mounted them? We have a plug in the wall that’s meant for a tv but I’m wondering if it’s a massive plug so it would stick out?

Hankunamatata · 29/08/2025 14:43

We use Google calendar shared and linked with amazon alexa. So the alexa does voice reminder for medications, appointments etc

44PumpLane · 05/09/2025 07:53

@Calmdownpeople I'm going to send you a quick DM if you don't mind- I'm thinking about making a purchase!

Did you bite the bullet and make the purchase? I'm thinking about this at the minute but have to make my choice within the next day as I have a 15% off code that expires tomorrow at 5pm!

InterestedDad37 · 05/09/2025 07:57

I tried, years ago, family calendar on Google calendars. Only I ever used it though 😂
Big fail, but we all survived 😊

Rehab4rightmove · 05/09/2025 08:11

@44PumpLane do you mind sharing where you got the discount code from?

I have a similar issue to the OP, and I've been debating Skylight for ages.

No, it would be a Christmas gift if I go ahead, I’ll hold off to see if there’s any offers on Black Friday! Keen to hear how it goes if you buy though!!

I have a similar issue to the OP, and I've been debating Skylight for ages.

If you attend one of their 30 minute Zoom presentation/chat sessions then they give you a code at the end of the session that is valid for 48 hours for 15% off. I'm just wondering if it stacks with the Refer a friend discount code.

Annoyingly they did a "back to school" offer earlier in the week that had about £30 off so I'm tempted to wait to see if they do a black Friday offer and then attend another one of the Q&A sessions to see if the 15% off would stack with the black Friday......at present with the 15% off I could buy the 15" for £248.75 delivered (delivery is £15).

Just for anyone finding this thread in the future the sessions are called "Skylight Unboxed" and I found it by going to their website then choosing "support" and then "choose a live calendar demo".

I actually asked a few questions about the plus features but you could easily just stick it on while you watch TV and then get the code from the chat at the end of the session.

Rehab4rightmove · 05/09/2025 10:58

Thank you @44PumpLane I think I'll wait until Black Friday too. I really want the large version, so its clear to see without having to actively look at it. I really need my kids to get a better understanding of planning/time mgt.
