my Dson Y1 teacher puts posts on to show what they have been learning and things are often misspelt. Today colourful was spelt ‘couliurful’

OP posts:

I agree this doesn’t look good and should be checked before sending but what if the teacher is dyslexic?
I have worked with a few amazing teachers who have been dyslexic, admittedly in secondary and not primary. I would handle this sensitively just in case.

If the teacher's dyslexia affects the children's learning, that's a huge problem right there.

I'm 56 and I still have to stop and think before I spell the word February because for most of the year when I was in year 2, I sat next to a wall with other kid's work on it and someone had spelled it 'Febrary'.

It's weird how deeply it subconsciously sank in.

StSwithinsDay · 08/05/2025 23:30

@Chocolate85
Have you ever seen spellcheck changing 'colourful' to ‘couliurful'.
'Couliurful' is not even a word.

This is true. Fat fingers maybe? If it really was misspelt then it’s pretty bad.

fedup1212 · 08/05/2025 23:51

I doubt it was misspelt. I,O and U are all in very close proximity on the QWERTY keyboard so I would be more inclined to think it was done in a rush and not proofread properly.

DublinLaLaLa · 09/05/2025 00:01

You’d all hate me then! I teach English up to A level and very much struggle with certain spellings. Notably anything that has - or I think might have - a double letter in the middle. What I do to overcome this difficulty is model to the children what I do when I’m unsure. I either consult the dictionary I usually have on the desk or, if not in my own room, I use the spell check function on my phone.

99% of the time, my spelling is correct (I think a life long lack of confidence in spelling has made me more paranoid than I need to be!) but I encourage children to point out any errors I’ve made and correct me on them. It’s rare, but it does happen (and they bloody love it when it does! 😆)

Stichintime · 08/05/2025 23:20

Seems more of a typo than a speeling mistake. Obviously written in a hurry, but yes, they should have checked before posting.

I can’t decide if the error was intentionally meant to sound like the policeman from ‘allo ‘allo or not, but either way it made me laugh after a rough day!! 😂

mathanxiety · 09/05/2025 00:35

I would be aghast.

I'd class a misspelling like that as an indication the teacher was borderline illiterate.

Netamount · 09/05/2025 00:39

I would be flabbergasted and nigh apoplectic at the egregious orthographic aberration besmirching the otherwise perspicuous manuscript—a lexical calamity of such sesquipedalian ignominy that it offends even the most phlegmatic of grammarians.

kwetu · 09/05/2025 00:43

Both spelling & punctuation seem to be an issue with much of school correspondence, concerning especially when it’s coming from a secondary education setting.

I needed this giggle, showing my age though!

HowManyMintCLubsIsTooMany · 09/05/2025 07:52

I know a primary teacher who regularly posts with poor SPAG on her Facebook posts (definitely not typos). Makes me cringe every time.

Newmumhere40 · 09/05/2025 07:53

It's probably been said but ...do you know how to use apostrophes?

Onelifeonly · 09/05/2025 07:55

Sorry but teachers should also know how to edit. We teach the children to do so.

DUsername · 09/05/2025 07:58

This is surely just a fat fingers moment rather than an actual spelling mistake though? I wonder whether the teacher is rushing because she's expected to update some sort of (what even is it, an app or website?) parent contact thing on top of everything else she has to do. As long as official correspondence and homework from the school is correct it wouldn't bother me

stichguru · 09/05/2025 07:59

I would say something. I wouldn't worry too much about her ability to teach spelling, as it's probably a typo, but I would worry about her lack of time, care ability to check what she posts!

BallerinaRadio · 09/05/2025 08:02

We had this recently, and I didn't believe it one bit then

TinkleTheIvories · 09/05/2025 08:03

Even if it is a typo, the teacher should be checking before pressing Send.

Doingmybest12 · 09/05/2025 08:03

I would assume a typo ,its a symptom of the ridiculous expectations of a continual back and forth of communication between school and home. If you genuinely think the teacher can not spell then bring it up but otherwise I'd cut some slack for typos and concentrate on building a good home school relationship.

Dreichweather · 09/05/2025 08:05

Hollyy8 · 08/05/2025 23:21

Yes, it definitely is the teacher as it says the name of who has posted it above. A vast majority of the posts have one word misspelt.

Edited

It tells you the name associated with the login. There is probably one log in per class.

OhBumBags · 08/05/2025 23:44

How many year 1 kids are likely to be reading this?

I mean approximately? 🤣

In all seriousness, unless the OP says she's a teacher, why should her SPAG be an example to anyone?

You're missing the point. I obviously wasn't suggesting that year 1 children would be reading this post.

ohtowinthelottery · 09/05/2025 08:06

I was spared the ordeal of ever having to point out spelling errors to teachers at DS's school, as DS had already pointed them out to them! (He was later diagnosed with ASD, so was always very 'honest' when things were wrong).

floppybit · 09/05/2025 08:07

I think it matters and it should be raised. I did the same at my son’s primary about them sending out letters filled with errors.

MeowCatPleaseMeowBack · 09/05/2025 08:08

I've never encountered a teacher with anything approaching solid spelling and grammar. There's not much you can do about it.

So what was your point?

Buzzybee25 · 09/05/2025 09:23

My child's teacher has written "explanation mark" a couple of times on the app, instead of "exclamation mark". Unfortunately, the app doesn't have any way to send a comment back, so holding off on correcting her. Really irritating me!

thing47 · 09/05/2025 09:50

I'd ask her what it is explaining... 😁
