AIBU unreasonable to want bright summery picnicware to eat BBQ food from?

OK, I know I probably am, but bear with me...

All my crockery is plain white. Deliberately done so it matches and it looks really good inside for dinner parties etc.

But outside for BBQs, I want something bright and colourful! Each year I get talked out of it by DH who points out that a) plastic = bad for the environment, b) we have plenty of white plates c) we'd not get much use out of outside plates due to British weather and d) we'd need somewhere to store them.

I know he's right on all counts, but am I wrong to want to eat a BBQ (or any other outside meal) of of something bright and cheerful? Lovely bright Moorish patterns or a bright Moroccan vibe would be my preference.

So do you have specific outdoor plates and serving dishes, and where might one be able to by lovely, colourful, cheerful sets of outdoor tableware? I did have a look in Sainsburys at the Habitat stuff, but a lot of it was quite earthy colours, rather than brights.

I'm looking for full size plates plus serving dishes. No plastic mugs/plastic glasses, and pudding bowls or side plates are optional.

I don’t have specific outdoor plates. I’m a bit like your DH seems wasteful for the
amount of times they’d get used and I’d have nowhere to store them.

The Range currently have some in, Melamine rather than plastic, so durable.

M&S have got some lovely stuff in in this exact style, can't buy it online at the moment unfortunately though!

Don't choose yellow. It attracts wasps.

Absolutely agree with you. Have no idea why but I have to have outside plastic stuff for outside and taking in picnics and it’s bright and colourful.

Mine is t used as much but it’s 15 years old and gets used yearly so I don’t think I’ve had a negative impact on the environment.

plus it’s harder to replace inside dinner sets if they get broken outside.

Can you compromise and buy some Moroccan type ceramic plates? I have 8 of these but do use them indoors every day because I love them!

GooseClues · 08/05/2025 16:00

If plastic is the issue then you can get some nice metal picnic plates.
If it’s more about the cost then get something colourful from a charity shop/vintage store.
Nothing much you can do about the storage space though.

He's right, but on the other hand if you are having friends over for barbecues, plastic can be good because it's light. If people are milling around in the garden eating and chatting, they are more likely to be standing up and it's easier to hold a plastic plate in one hand than a ceramic one.

@kitchenplans this is what you need, it is ceramic though

I LOVE this! Exactly what I'm looking for. Bright and cheerful! Annoyingly the M&S shut in our town in the last cull, and I'm not sure where our nearest non food hall M&S is...

Find sone other way to make the affair bright - bright punch in a plain jar , bright colourful sides and salads, garden flowers in vase, bright serviettes ( always needed at a Barbie )
