To be panicking about holiday with 3 year old and 3 month old to Algarve?

I realise this might sound dumb to some people but I'm not a very confident traveller, or a confident parent of two if I'm honest! DH and I haven't managed to get abroad in ages so decided on a bit of a whim to book a holiday to the Algarve this June with our two DC, who will be age 3 and age 3 months. It's our first time abroad with kids and the sheer amount of kit we'll need etc I'm finding very overwhelming and not sure how we'll manage to take it all? The villa does have a cot but baby is still in a next-to-me so I'm worried the cot will be too big and low.

We also booked in a bit of a rush for various reasons and I now think we've booked the wrong place :-( We've gone for a villa in Vale de Lobo but now I've started doing a bit of research, it sounds like this is an expensive resort-type place, rather than a town where normal Portuguese people live, so no shops/normal restaurants etc - all expensive tourist places and beach clubs. The pictures of the beaches also look like there's not much on them, whereas I think we'll need amenities like toilets, cafes, playgrounds, sunshades etc.

Has anyone done a similar trip and can make me feel better about this? I was hoping to be excited about it but at the moment I'm just filled with dread and wondering if it's all a big mistake? We'd lose the money if we cancel so ideally wouldn't do that. DH thinks I'm overthinking it but isn't coming up with anything that makes me feel better about plans! We have hired a car so can get about but the kids aren't great in the car so don't want to drive far each day.

We have family in Vale do Lobo and go a few times every year. It's perfect for a family holiday. The local supermarket is inexpensive and sells pretty much everything (the fresh bread and croissants are amazing). There's a kids club by the beach, think it's called the penguin club and a mini golf. Plus there's lots of restaurants in the same place, they used to have music and a children's disco at night but not sure that still happens. One of the benefits of staying in vale do lobo is the resort bus, it will pick you up and drop you off anywhere on the resort.
They have just redeveloped the tennis centre and there's a pool there too.
The beach bars are really relaxed, Julia's is my favourite.
It's worth going into Loulé on a Saturday to the market, the tapas restaurant inside is incredible and great value.
Our favourite restaurant when the children were little was Marufo 2, on the way to Quarteira. It's stupidly cheap and really good chicken and chips etc.
I feel like I'm going on a bit now - sorry! I think you'll have an amazing time. If you want any more info just shout!

Wanted to come back and update this thread as we are now back from our holiday and had a brilliant time, in large part thanks to all of you lovely lot who gave your time and advice!

When I originally posted I was in the depths of post-partum anxiety, dealing with horrible colic and still not physically healed, so the trip felt like a huge challenge, but it’s amazing what a difference 7 weeks can make in newborn / post-partum life and I was much stronger physically and mentally by the time we went.

I also felt so much more confident for having all these tips and following them! Thanks to the poster who suggested a blow-up paddling pool - we didn’t even fill it up but DC just loved sitting in it with toys to play with!

One tip for anyone else in future doing similar - if you have a baby who likes the sling then take an umbrella / parasol to take with you on walks, to shade both you and the baby. Other than that, pool, plus aircon plus one little trip out a day was a winning formula, so didn’t actually need lots of entertainment after all.

Would recommend 3 months old as a good time for travel, especially if breastfeeding as all they do is sleep and feed so you don’t need to take much with you at all as long as accommodation has a travel cot. Remember to apply for passport and GHIC in early days though!

Thanks again everyone!

You really don't need to take that much with young children. Since having DC, I always travel light.
