Is it weird to have all chairs in your living room and no sofa?

I've currently got a 3 seater and a two seater. I want to change it to all chairs. Nobody ever sits next to anyone on the sofas. So the 2 seater is a chair and the 3 seater has a buffer seat in the middle.

I'd much prefer all chairs. Ideally recliner chairs. High ones. Ones that can tip you forward to help your aging knees so you don't have to groan oh my knees every time you haul your fat arse up.

But I have this voice in my head whispering that it's weird to have 5 chairs in your living room and no sofa.

Only I can't explain why its weird. I have no actual reason. And the voice in my head judging me for it has nothing more substantial to contribute than it'll look like a waiting room.

So is it weird? If it's weird do you know why it's weird or do you just have a vague wrongness feeling about it too? And why the fuck am I not just having chairs in my living room if I want them instead of asking stupid questions about it?

Does anyone actually have all chairs in your living room and if you do, can I see how it looks?

I know I'm being daft about it. It is just so odd to have this weird feeling about something. It's not quite the right way to do things but there's no actual reason why not.

It's quite bizarre! It's my bloody house and I'm sat here like a wazzock thinking yes but can I really just have chairs?

I mean, obviously the answer is yes, you twat.

But there's still an air of wrongness about it.

Like having cake for your breakfast. 😁

Well we must be weird. Due to the layout of our (small) living room having a sofa and chairs really didn’t work. There’s only two of us so we have 3 recliners.

Tarantella6 · 07/05/2025 18:52

My parents only have chairs and yes it is weird, there is never enough space for guests to sit and it looks like old people live there. But old people do live there and it works for them so why not 😅

monktasmic · 07/05/2025 18:55

I’ve got a 4 seater and a 3seater - then 3 mismatched arm chairs and 2 foot rests one can sit one. We need the couches for —the dog— guests.

KnittedFerret · 07/05/2025 18:59

@Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast , I don't have a sofa and it weirds people out. I had two but never sat on them. I now have a recliner and footstool and massive beanbags.

DoAsYouWouldBeMumBy · 07/05/2025 19:04

Do none of you ever put your feet up? I usually have my feet up or curled under me when I’m on the sofa, can’t do that on a chair easily.

candycane222 · 07/05/2025 19:05

Never found a sofa that was we comfortable..we have four armchairs - all cream leather but two different styles. I don't think our matching chairs and personal bits and pieces living room looks remotely institutional!!

candycane222 · 07/05/2025 19:06

Oh and matching footstools for when we want to put our feet up

BitOutOfPractice · 07/05/2025 19:06

Doesn’t anyone ever lie on the sofa?

BobbyBiscuits · 07/05/2025 19:07

Have whatever you like and is most likely to be used.
My mum has only chairs and she's happy!

LlynTegid · 07/05/2025 19:08

Unusual maybe, but not weird.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 07/05/2025 19:11

We did it for a while and the room looked really lovely. We had vintage 1930s chairs with cream upholstery which were very comfortable. I'm not sure it would be as appealing with the chairs you describe and we're back to sofas now.

Sorry, not helpful!

Ddakji · 07/05/2025 19:15

I have an elderly aunt who is a woman of many chairs. Her living room is fairly square though. Her chairs (Parker Knoll, I think) are pretty comfy.

blubbyblub · 07/05/2025 19:26

All the rooms I can find online with no sofa seem to cluster chairs around a central table

It's a bit unusual but if you want to do it, go for it! It's your house!

I'm just wondering whether something like a cinema sofa would work? So, still chairs functionally but with enough of a sofa aesthetic to not look waiting-roomy.

Lots of people do; but lots of people don't.

As well as what you personally find comfy or not, it also depends on your height/size and flexibility.

As OP is either disabled, on the more mature side, or otherwise thinking ahead to when she will be a little more advanced in years (what with considering riser armchairs), that may just not be something she ever thinks of doing - or is/expects to be summarily unable to do.

Similar with baths: now our DS is older, none of us ever have baths and much prefer showers; but for lots of folk, a bath is the absolute highlight of their evening. One difference, I guess, is when selling your house: a bath may increase your desirability reach to potential buyers, but you usually take your chairs/sofas/other furniture with you.

uncomfortablydumb60 · 07/05/2025 22:24

I had a 2 seat sofa and a chair until I had a complete refurb and adapted kitchen so I now have a riser recliner( which I race the dog for) and 3 ikea poangs
i have a butchers block trolley thing which I pull out to eat on.
Its all about making use of the space available( not much in my case!)

I think it would look like a care home or a waiting room with just chairs.

This.

Ive viewed properties furnished like this. Always looked like care homes. Whether that’s a problem
if not is personal taste.

Lighteningstrikes · 07/05/2025 22:57

It will look like a waiting room 😉

ThisLovingTiger · 07/05/2025 22:58

I say your house your choice. If you are more comfortable with armchairs go for it

This was exactly my thought, old people care homes often have horseshoe shape arrangement of highback parker knowl style chairs or those tip forward variety to aid with getting up etc.

But it's OPs space and ultimately needs to meet their needs. So whatever a bunch of random people say on mumsnet is irrelevant.

Plenty of sofas that people have in their homes look (and feel) like waiting room-style ones to me.

We stayed in a holiday cottage a few years back and, whilst the rest of it was lovely, the sofa in the living room was a deal-breaker for us ever returning. Fine for 20 minutes in the GP's waiting room, but useless and horribly uncomfy for snuggling into all evening in front of the TV.

DiscoBeat · 07/05/2025 23:05

We have teens who like to stretch out but I have been thinking about swapping from our current two large sofas and one arm chair to one large sofa and two fireside chairs. We have a big fireplace so I like the idea of sitting beside it in chairs.

samarrange · 07/05/2025 23:10

It's not at all weird. Nor is it weird if none of the chairs match each other, or if you have a sofa and the chairs are different.

We have done 30+ home exchange holidays, and one of the benefits is that you get all kinds of liberating ideas because there's always something about your partners' house that is a bit unusual. Sometimes it is also actually weird, but sometimes it's an "A-ha" moment.

Right now we have a 2-person and a 3-person sofa that match, but in our last home before DC moved out we had three chairs and a 2-person sofa, all different designs and patterns.

Whatifitallgoesright · 07/05/2025 23:12

It could give a bit of a secure unit vibe.
